Hehe just a quick post - why oh why do folk rate these threads? It's quite silly and i'd like to make an appeal for folks not to bother (for this fest.)

It's unfair for some folk to come in and see that some gimp has rated their scripts thread 1 or 2 stars etc... Its also mindless sycophancy for some to rate others 5.

That's my appeal ;) I saw some rated at 1 and 2 today, and i smacked a big 5 on them, because as artists - we should show more respect to our peers (and vote accordingly within the rules of the competition) and not subtly though the use of thread ratings...

;)

Yep i mean they serve their purpose in the forum 'proper' as it were to denote those threads that have great info, are useful etc (so sure rate this if you want DarkElastic haha). But that this is not appropriate i think for people's competition threads, where some are fanboy'd with 5's and others put down.

I fully intend and ask any of the rest of you, that should some sad git rate somebodies thread a 1 or 2 - to pump them up with a 5. The discrete discovery of their ranking through secret competition ballot and feedback from fellow writers is one thing. Coming online to see folk putting 1 star on your thread, is embarassing and unnecessary (and utterly inappropriate in the subjective world of art.)

Nobody should feel down as a result of mkaing the effort to enter this competition, encouragement and advice is all they need and respect is what they deserve.

they work a bit like reviews. As soon as you give a high rating someone drags it right down lol!

the thread ratings serve no purpose, so ignore as they won't effect opinions (well shouldn't effect opinions)....

But do they?

Great and useful info threads can be posted as a sticky, but who is to say what information amongst the thousands and thousands of threads is worthwhile to someone? They seem to have incredibly little value anywhere, in my opinion.

I agree that in competition threads the ratings are completely useless (and inappropriate). But I wonder if there's a way to turn them off completely, and I would be an advocate of doing so system-wide.

Why bother with these rating stars if they don't mean anything - or is there a 'subtext' to the stars... some kind of conspiracy...hehe

i was wondering what the hell those were. is this another thing you have to have a certain number of posts to be able to do?

I reckon they should only appear (if at all) after a certain number of people have rated the thread sufficiently to give it a meaningful average. 5 stars from 1 vote is hardly a good recommendation but it appears as strongly as five stars from 20 people. Yes OK you can wand over them and see but they have already perhaps unfairly grabbed your attention..
