i just got my dvx back from the repair shop from a fryed firewire port. and i just turned it on for the first time and the gain is stuck on 6dB and wont switch when i move the switch, the white balance wont work in awb, preset or channel a/b mode... also, the iris dial wont work, the only way to ajust the iris is to go into auto iris then back to manual... i need an answer by 7 tonight (pst)
is there a setting or is the board controling those switches messed up?

I don't know if it will help, but have you tried pushing the reset button behind the LCD?

yes i did, and the camera turned off and turned back on, but no settings changed...
i think im just going to buy a new camera
i just spent 1000 on a new circuit board for the firewire port, and i do not want to pay for another board here... since the stupid repair place always messes up (13 times they have broken my camera[s] even more than the time i sent it in)
i might as well buy a new dvx100b and avoid rental places...
or i might upgrade to a hpx170 instead and go tapeless to avoid tape head issues too...
or should i invest in a firestore or get a slave cam

Hmm...
Fool me once - shame on you.
Fool me twice - shame on me.
Fool me 13 times, ... shame on the school system.

It seems to me the repair shop should have made sure the camera was working properly before returning it to you. Not just the firewire port, but everything.
Have you determined how your firewire port got fried? I had a small MiniDV cam connected to my editing PC when lightning knocked out the power for a moment. When the power came back on, apparently it surged. Fried the firewire port on my PC and turned my camcorder into a doorstop.
Was your camera working properly (other than the firewire port) when you sent it in for repair? If so, then you should raise cain with the owner or manager of the repair shop until they fix -- for free -- the damage they obviously caused. If they won't, talk to a lawyer and the Better Business Bureau.
(Might want to tell us where this repair shop is, so we can avoid it.)

well... when i fried the port, i had a bad cable because i was positive that my camera was off before i plugged in the firewire cord. it was NOT plugged in to the computer yet though... so i dont know if that was the problem... it was working fine other than that before i sent it in!!! they kept it for 7 weeks before i got it back. the place is here in Los Angeles called Computer Works. even though i get everything through evs in glendale, they send all the repairs to computer works!!!
Never heard of Computer Works before...EVS used to send all their stuff to Digitronics in LA (best place for DVX repair).
I'd take the camera back and make them fix it properly.
