Hey everyone. Jason asked me to design a banner campaign for QuestFest. Curious which ones are your faves and thoughts on other quest-like films I should homage.
What do you think?

awesome! my order of preference...
1. Indy
2. 2001
3. nat treas
but a thought i had was to find something that is less genre-specific (adventure, sci-fi) that captures the essence of a journey. but I have no ideas beyond that. :(

I actually like them in display order.
1. Indy
2. National Treasure
3. 2001

agreed... too genre specific... it's gonna be a challenge in design.

I think if you took the Indy background and placed the National Treasure Logo on it, it would do a good job of being general in terms of genre.

Hmm the point was to homage specific movies... I'm looking for more to do.. that way it can be genre specific... but include a broader range of genres.
The Lossfest banner I made was pretty genre specific... in fact it was pretty morbid. And it's funny, cuz the winning film was a comedy!
So my hope, since Jason suggested doing a number of different banners, is to try and homage different films with quest-like themes and cover a spectrum of genres... not necessarily to create one uber banner that's all encompassing.

They all look fantastic! Too genre specific though.
Maybe they could use all of them, set them to cycle from banner to banner.
Creating a more neutral banner could certainly prove challenging.

I like the homage idea ... I think it works. This is a "film" festival after all :)
Hard to pick one, or pick an order. They all have unique qualities that make them so pleasing. If I can think of other films to homage I'll let you know.
What about an old time classic (e.g. Casablance, Maltese Falcon, etc). They always had a very unique look to their promo material. Might make an interesting banner

That's the plan!
So why are we picking? :)
I would like to back up the Casablanca request and throw in the Godfather.
Alright.... maybe now I'm just picking movies that I love.

But that's fine ... all solid stories should have a "quest". A dramatic tale should be about someone trying, against all odds, to get somewhere/do something (and of course, there should be someone equally dedicated to preventing it from happening)
So all movies really are eligible for homage in these banners. Though I understand using the Indy/Nat. Treas films as they are the first thought kind of story with the term "quest"

How about a these two quest classics?
- The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
- The Ten Commandments
We must not forget a true classic about a quest for a mysterious box:
- Kiss Me Deadly

Love "Sierra Madre" ... "Badges, we ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges"
"I know what gold does to men's souls".
"Can you help a fellow American down on his luck?"
Ah, great film :)

i was just thinking of it from the perspective of someone new to the fest, who sees this for the first time. "indy" seems the most popular so far but how many newbies would we lose who see this and think "it's all 'raiders' and 'lord of the rings' knock-offs, no thanks".
this is actually and idea for a separate campaign, but i'd like to see something that communicates the idea of joining of the community and participating in the fest. something that's true to the idea of a theme requirement, not a genre, and not something that plays like an ad for the content you'll find here in three months, but a call to participate. know what i mean?
again, this isn't a criticism of these banners. they're lovely. this is an idea for a new campaign to add on to this one.

I'm not really worried about scaring people off with the banners... but I agree with your idea. Though it would be better suited as for social networking sites... like you've done with LossFest. Creating DVX facebook pages, twitter pages, myspaces, friendsters, etc. is the best means of recruiting noobs.
But good call on LOTR... that'll make a friggin sweet banner! haha

i agree, these are great internally.

I have to say i love the Indy one. and, since this is an homage, I think this one brings it home the most for me.

Great job on all of them!
The "Raiders of the Lost Ark" style sums up the quest theme at a glance. The fact that very few films will likely be action adventure makes it all the more fun, and a little ironic in a playful way.

okay, putting my money where my mouth is.... I made some campaign material (not intended to compete with blindbuzta's banners)...
a sig 468x60 banner for spreading the word.
http://www.isarapix.org/pix32/1238197458.jpg
and a poster for spreading around facebook, myspace, etc...
i'll probably revise this (its a work in progress) to cut down on the amount of text.

looks nice, Zak... turn the banner into an 890 x 100 and i'll put it in the rotation as well.
I'm going to have several different ones running under one campaign to keep things fresh. Just haven't gotten around to putting them up yet.

nice banners, but just the thought of NT leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I can't wait until they make a real forth Indiana Jones movie.

I don't know about the possibility of a REAL forth Indy film... I'm just waiting for them to issue pills that will erase Crystal Skull from our memories.
