can you export frames from fcp 5 as a picture file (.tiff, .jpeg)?

File > export using quicktime conversion.
On the format tab choose still image - click options and choose which type.

I did the QT conversion for a long time. I have found it tedious to then have to convert the pixel and aspect ratio when grabbing 16:9 footage. I find it is easier to view the canvas at full screen in FCP (command+f12) and take a screen shot (command+shift+3). Screen shots can be taken in any file format, mine is set to .TIFF.

Yes, this is much faster, but I wouldnt be doing that if your intended purpose is to reinsert the frame/frames back into your timeline.

If you were doing that, then you'd just freeze frame in FCP. I do the full frame view and then frame grab. Click shift-apple-4 and a cursor comes up. Click the corner of your frame and hold it down, then you can drag a square over the part of the picture you want to grab and release. By default the pictures get saved to your desktop as Picture1..2..etc.

Batutta, i think Noel means that you do not get the correct pixel size, dimensions and color by using a screen shot. I do it the old fashion way when needing to get re-insert the grab into the timeline, but for the most part, it is just a grab for reference. Command shift 3 or 4 is the quick and dirty way to do it.

I meant that if you were going to use a still frame from a clip in your timeline, you'd just use the freeze frame command inside final cut, not exporting or grabbing a still and then re-importing it.
