View Full Version : Next Fest... Pick one of the two...

Jason Ramsey

This is NOT to say that the next fest will be either of these, OR that the results of the poll will determine the next fest. But, these are the two popular choices right now, and so we thought we would open it up to a poll for the next few days, so as to allow for additional member feedback and input into the process.

If these were your only two choices, pick one. The poll will close when voting closes on round two of LossFest as we will be announcing the next fest when we announce the winners as usual. This will allow us a little time to take the feedback from the poll into account along with what we are currently discussing.

So....

Quest or Crime.......

Here are a couple of rough blurbs courtesy of Jack to give you an idea of where we would be thinking of heading with either of these

Blackmail, robbery, the double cross, the con, or good old fashioned cold blooded murder. Rioting in the streets, knocking over a bank, or a lover’s betrayal up close and personal compliments of an arsenic tainted wine glass. Whether in the shadowy black and white streets of wise crackin’ dames and hardboiled detectives, in lurid color between the pages of an old pulp magazine, in the wild west, in outer space, in a board room, or in a bedroom, one thing’s for certain – a crime has been committed, is happening as we speak, or is just about to go down. Maybe your story focuses on the wrong side of the law – the crooks – yeah sure, and why shouldn’t it, they got their side to tell too. Or maybe you focus on those that try to prevent, fight, or discover what happened after things have gone south. Or, maybe it’s more complicated than that. Most of us are a mixed bag after all. How about a good guy that does bad things to bring about justice, or a bad guy that ain’t all that bad at the end of the day. In any event, your story centers on breaking the law – past, present, or future - and must involve criminals, cops, or both in DVXuser's Crime Fest.

Don't be afraid to dig deep. This can be more than just about getting away with murder (which is fine). But it's also OK to ask what's REALLY at stake? What does it mean not only in terms of material gain but emotionally, personally and / or psychologically to your characters if they fail or succeed? What are the politics and personal relationships like in a gang of crooks, a squad of cops, or even between cops and criminals?

There’s something out there. Something virtually unobtainable. Something your protagonist needs despite the incredible odds and obstacles that stand in his/her way. They may need help along the way from new allies, but careful those allies don’t turn out to be wolves in Grandma’s clothing. Whether it’s sacred scrolls hidden in the land of the living dead, the phone number of that certain someone, a brain, a heart, a highly guarded diamond, a smile from an embittered friend – whatever it is your characters need more than anything else – their journey begins at DVXuser’s QUEST FEST.

Don't be afraid to dig deep. This can be more than just about getting through booby traps in an unearthed temple (which is fine). But it's also OK to ask what's REALLY at stake? What does it mean not only in terms of fame and fortune but emotionally, personally and / or psychologically to your characters if they fail?

Jason

Crime in my opinion kind of average, or should I say saturated, Quest sound like it will be more of a chanllenge.

I feel like quest fest has been done with the old hero fest and even spy fest.

Go Crimefest! :D

Yeah not to be cheeky - but i think crimefest will lend itself to way too many american - airsoft laden action style mafioso / espionage TV rip offs! I'd have to sit through millions of movies featuring the latest action fx pack from Andrew Kramer hehe (I love that guy too) but questfest on the other hand...

Well that i love as it seems to encourage 'epic form' story telling with grand character arcs, journeys etc. So that sounds inspiring and exciting to me personally and could include crime story elements anyway but without making it such a requirement.

Go Quest Fest! Hell you can have crime in the quest too if you were so inclined. There: I'll make mine about a quest for crime...

I'm down for Quest...

Chances are many of the entries will deal with 'deaths' and 'crime' anyway.. :)

QuestFest allows a much wider interpretation. In fact, I believe it could easily encompass all of CrimeFest. Or any fest, for that matter. That being said, I think it will serve as an effective reminder for creators to focus on a good story with the necessary components.

quest. and not just b/c it was my idea. I like the idea of a journey. or more specifically, of a wanderlust.

Crimefest

Actually, the idea I have can be used for either Quest or Crime. I'd prefer to watch more films focusing on Crime though.

it's really neck and neck. although, the quest supporters seem more vocal so far... if that counts for anything.

how about CriminalQuestFest?

I'll throw my weight behind Questfest. I missed Lossfest and am excited to participate in a fest again. Questfest sounds like a good way to stretch.

Both sound good. Crime might be good if it was done without all the blood and guts. Quest could be a lot of things. I don't care. Is there a time limit on the poll I can't make up my mind! LOL

It's gonna be Quest IMO. I have sctipt ready to go that fits either one.

I'm stepping way out of my comfort zone for the next fest. No guns, no cursing, and no blood. For at least one of my films anyway. : )

I've always thought the best stories are adventures, even if only domestic or suburban. I say go quest fest. If we do crime fest I worry that a lot of bad movies will be made. I think many will try to do some sort of story involving cops, detectives, FBI, etc., which is REALLY hard to pull off well and is often executed VERY poorly. Purely an opinion of course.

Also I think that quest as apposed to crime has a more open and free feel to it as a genre. I think LossFest was spectacular because it was so open.

I haven't done a DVXUser Fest in a while. I think I'd be up for QuestFest.

I like the idea of quest fest. Not like I will ever get around to enter one of these...tear. I think Quest fests leaves the door open for a lot of deeply personal films, which I think will result in some really good films.

my 2 cents

I would agree to disagree, I think crime is harder to pull off on a low budget without being able to properly control all of your environments if you venture out to locations. Quest can pass off a lack of civilians just in genre alone. I actually really like both ideas and I think that I would always seek out a way to make it challenging. Even if it were singletake-guy sitting in chair-no dialogue-no soundtrack-no principal or camera movement-fest. When are we supposed to find out what the next fest is?

You guys don't have to worry about debating the merits or not of each one :) We've already thoroughly exhausted all of that behind the scenes.

this poll is just another piece of data for us to help weigh a decision. Just one piece of the puzzle.

:)

For what it's worth I was blown away by the variations on the LossFest theme. I thought it would all be weepy depressing movies, but everyone did a great job of making the film they wanted to while adhering to the rules. It's certainly inspired me to up my game the next time I enter a DVXFest. It feels to me like the community rounded a corner with the whole fest theme thing.

QuestFest for me. I love adventure type. It would be pretty tough but fun in the same way because there are so many ways to pull of a nice quest. Yea, crime can be the same way, but I see quest for fun and interesting. Specially seeing what the other films will be about. I've already got a few ideas digging through my mind.

QUESTFEST!

QuestFest seems very interesting to me. The theme lets space for lots of different ideas. My first thought was the phantasy genre like 'Lord of the rings'.

BRILLIANT! A Quest for Breakfast! The possibilities run amok in my head... You could even have (wait for it)... a CEREAL KILLER!

I prefer QuestFest. CrimeFest would lead to too many CSI-like shorts. QuestFest might encourage outside-the-box thinking.

On the other hand, I think those that want to do outside-the-box shorts will do so regardless of the genre.

Good point.

But I think QuestFest as apposed to CrimeFest "might encourage outside-the-box thinking" for potentially more entrants than those who would've naturally done so anyway due to the open nature of its theme.

I also prefer the idea of QuestFest. But I'll echo a few others and say that a CrimeFest without typical violence/guns could be quite interesting.
