Transfering AVCHD files to External

My goal is to be able to transfer from my SDHC card to my external hard drive without transcoding the clips in FCP(keep .mts i guess). And then when I'm ready do a log and transfer from my external hard drive to FCP via eSATA or USB. I tried copying the .mts to the hard drive but fcp didn't even recognize it when i clicked log and transfer. Is this even possible? If so which exact files from my memory card have to go to the hard drive? I was just copying the .mts ones.

You have to copy the entire folder.. Everything that's in the private folder. You need the whole file structure for FCP to recognize it.. and you will also need to be on an intel mac with the latest FCP.
