As I was posting the link, it was being reported on television that she was brain dead and that her family didn't want her on life support.

My artist just had a snow boarding accident this weekend and went to the hospital after hurting her back. Its scary that you can be ok for a while and take a turn for the worst.

I had a neighbor who got in a drunken fight, was kicked in the head, went home seemingly fine, laid down to sleep and never woke up. Hope she pulls through. There's a lot of conflicting information out there right now.

It's so strange, wasn't it like a beginners course and wasnt she okay afterwards. Poor woman, she had no idea this would be her last day.

Green runs (beginners courses) can be deceptively dangerous because they are flatter (so instead of falling and sliding/rolling to a stop you fall and your body absorbs all the impact) and they tend to be harder packed snow/ice because they are higher traffic areas so soft snow gets 'skied off' and/or packed down.

EDIT:
Last season I got a mild concussion snowboarding and although I felt okay (just a bit out of it) the Ski Patrol told my gf to keep a close eye on me and get me to a hospital ASAP if I started acting/feeling strange later in the day because that could be a sign of bleeding in my brain.

WOW. This is incredibly tragic. One of those stories that force you to stop and think. Really, really tragic.

She is a fabulous actress.

I feel terrible for Liam.

Hmm... what a depressing event. I hope she enjoyed the time she had... and that her time with Liam was great... especially the last moments.

Life is fleeting... for both the mighty and the meek... and all of us in between.

Peace.

This is terrible, phew...insane.

I've had 2 bad skiing accidents, destroyed my left shoulder in one and my left knee in another...all before graduation. I wont even go near a hill...

It's so easy to get hurt snowboarding or skiiing, trust me.

Sounds like a slow-onset subdural hematoma. You could be fine for days as it builds, then the headaches come on, then dizziness, finally ending with coma and death. Seen it a couple of times. Hard to diagnose until true symptoms appear (and by then, it's usually too late). And since she was asymptomatic at the time of her exam, even more difficult.

What an unfortunate tragedy.

WOW! Heard she refused to wear a helmet as well. How sad.
If only she had gone straight to the hospital as instructed, who knows.

Very sad. :(

Terrible tragedy.

Random and senseless...Didn't know she was only 45, thought she was older. Tears for Liam.

That is a shame; I always enjoyed her work.

Not one of us knows how long we have.

What is it with looking fashionable and not being safe on the slopes? Sonny Bono hit a tree and died, he didn't wear a helmet either. I don't get it, a helmet can save your life. This is really sad, heard one of her sons was with her when it happened?

I can't imagine having to take my wife off of life support. Especially at such a young age!
Tragic. :(

She was a beautiful woman, fine actress and great mother...what a shame.

This is so sad and so unexpected.

Having skied for years without a helmet, it's hard to understand how a fall on a bunny slope can cause such a tragic injury.

Loved both her and her sister's movies.

One of favorites, surprisingly, is Loch Ness with Joely Richardson

Very sad

Having skied for years without a helmet, it's hard to understand how a fall on a bunny slope can cause such a tragic injury.

Just the right angle, just the right acceleration, just the right degree of hardness in packed snow, ice, or underlying ground or rock.

I broke/tore/sprained a fair number of things while skiing, once or twice on comparatively benign slopes, even when I was at peak form while racing.
