hi all, i am a total noob, and this question may seem kind of dumb, but i was wondering, i am shooting 1/48 with hv20, but when i import the m2t files into vegas, it seems that most of the templates are 29.9something fps. is this a limitation that i just have to deal with (having my frames trimmed), or is there another setting that i should use? please let me know what settings you usually would use. i am shooting cine mode with 1080:24p?

1/48 is the shutter speed, 29.97 is the frame rate. If you are using 24p mode than you have to use another software like TMPGenc or Cineform's Neo scene to remove the pulldown since 24p video is recorded within 60i signal. Or you can just leave it as it is and finalize it as 1080/60i.

oh, so if i render the final video as 1080/60i it would be of good quality?

The resolution alone is not enough to get good quality. You also need to factor in the compression and the bitrate. If you render out as 1080/60i with 25Mpbs constant bitrate and mpeg2 compression you will match your camcorder settings.

ok, sorry, i'm just going to throw a couple of noob questions at you first:
-what is the difference between shutterspeed and frame rate?
-what is a "pulldown"?
and as for the quality, i guess what you are saying is, the resolution of the picture alone does not get good quality, but also the rates of the video and compression of the image, right?
thanks a lot.

Frame rate is how many times a frame is captured per second. for example if you set it to 24p it means 24 frames or pictures per second. Shutter speed is how many times the camcorder opens and closes its shutter to record those frames.
Pulldown is the method used to record 24p video in a 60i stream. To get your 24p video back you have to reverse this operation which is called removing the pulldown.

exactly

Just shoot in HDV which is 1080 60i

Its more a question of look. 24p will give a more cine like look to your footage

It is not a dumb question. It depends on what you are shooting. 24p will give you more film like look but it is not suitable to use with fast moving objects. If you are shooting a car race or a football game 60i will be better. Also 24p produces better results in low light.
