Hello,
I'm starting a TV show project that I need to record 4 days / week, kind of documentary stuff.
I like the HPX300 specs, but what is the longest time I can record in a 16gb card ? What is the best codec for long recording / good quality (I don't need 4:2:2)
Any option to record more ?
Thanks,
Ulisses

DV is 4:1:1. So in standard you could record 4 mins per GB. In HD, AVC-Intra at 50Mb is 4:2:0 and that would eat up the card at 2 minutes a GB. Now if you shot in 24Pn with the AVC-Intra 50 you could get 2.5 minutes per GB.
If you go to the Brochure and look at the chart on page 10, it give you a basic breakdow.

Hope this helps,

thanks Jan !
Can I use the Firestore with AVC-intra 50 ?

AVCIntra, as I understand it, does not stream out firewire.

You can record DVCHD to the firestore 1-2 hours I believe. Depending on what Firestore you get.

That is correct David, AVC-Itra will not pass over firewire.
Sorry,

Do you know if it would be possible to record avc intra to the p2 while streaming dvcproHD via the firewire to a Firestore? My gut reaction be no, but if any one knows.

Hi Jan,
I'm living in Belgium and purchased a HVX 200 in august 2006 and I'm very satisfied.
My business is growing up and I intend to day to buy the new HPX 301 in Europe in the next few months, essentialy to get the possibility to work with the new Panasonic codec AVCIntro HD.
I've just read that hte AVC-Intra will not pass over firewire.
Ok, but then, what can I transfer the files from the P2 card to my MAC PRO.
Do I get a new acquisition card ? And what happens if I want to work on a notebook MAC ?
Thank you for your answer.
Norbert.

You can transfer files, it is just the compressed live stream that won't work.
Best,

Sorry, only one codec at a time.

Thank you Jan,
Do you mean that the transfer of AVCIntra 100 mbs through a wirefire connection to the MAC PRO or a NOTEBOOK, or the a external HD will take a longer time than realtime (I mean 1 GO for 1 min) ?
And in this case, how much time in comparison of the DVCPRO HD 100 mbs ?
Tank you
Norbert.

Norbert I believe the numbers your talking about, Jan was referring to actual record times.
Not offload / transfer data times.

In 1080/24pN, yes. But in 720/24pN it's actually five minutes per gig, so a single 32GB card could yield almost three hours of footage...

Transferring from a P2 card to a computer usually happens at the rate of 2GB/minute, but can be as fast as 6GB/minute. That means that with a 64GB card, you could offload about six hours worth of 720/24pN footage in a grand total of 11 minutes. Or, an hour of 1080/60i or 720/60p in about 11 minutes. Or, when going to a laptop, you could expect more like 32 minutes to transfer a 64GB card.

OK, Barry I understand.
But my question was :when we have to transfer to the computer or external HD AVC Intra HD ( 100 mb/s) through wire fire, will this transfer take the same time ( I think yes but not sure) ?
Thanks a lot.
Norbert.

The fastest way would be direct from card inserted into the computer.
Firewire/USB transfers would be slower.

I've asked about this before, but how does 720/24pN Intra50 compare with 100?
Has anyone evaluated the comparison?

The card transfer speed has nothing to do with what format it was recorded in. It's all data at that point. So whether you recorded 16 gigabytes of AVC-I 100, or 16 gigabytes of DVCPRO50, or 16 gigabytes of DV, it all transfers at exactly the same speed.

It should compare reasonably well with DVCPRO-HD 720/24pN, since both are 960x720. DVCPRO-HD has the 4:2:2 advantage but 8-bit, AVCI-50 has the 10-bit advantage but 4:2:0; AVC is half the bitrate but twice the efficiency, so ... no, I haven't tried 'em side by side, but by the math I'd say it'd be close to comparable. We'd have to evaluate live images though because it's pretty near impossible to settle these questions by relying on the math or the specs.

Got that.
But who is on first?
