Hi All,

I have been doing a lot of DVD from mini DV but never put video clip on the web. What format should I render the AVI source file so that I can put it on the web .

Thank You

M4V.
USe Quicktime Pro or Apple's Compressor to convert to H.264 format.
In Quicktime it's "Movie to iPod"
I have not really come across a better web delivery format that is this simple.

H.264 is the standard right now, and if you upload to a service like Vimeo or Youtube it gets converted to their format as well.

mainly H.264 but it depends on what you are going to put it on. if you want you can export it at a higher quality up to 1GB for youtube. i dont know what vimeos limit is on size. i always have a lower quality h.264 video ready and a m4v for iPods, but now i am starting to have a larger h.264 around...

Got to echo all those sentiments. H.264 with 768k video and 128k AAC audio does a fantastic good job at a reasonable file size. QuickTime Pro is definitely worth it, does the best conversion I have seen.

So, in Vegas 8.0 , what template should I choose to render so that I can put the video clip on the web. I could not find any template associated with H.264

Thanks

OK.
Here ya go. I just did this:

1. RENDER AS >
2. SAVE AS TYPE "MainConcept AVC/AAC (MP4)
3. TEMPLATE "Apple iPod 640X480 Video
4. UNcheck all chechboxes below.

MainConcept is the same encoder ADOBE uses for its h.264
Vegas doesn't actually SAY h.264 but I think MP4 and M4V are both done by h.264...
Can anyone verify this for us.

Lately, I've been fond of the .divx format.

I thought Flash was the dominant format for the web. That's what's on You Tube, Vimeo, and just about every other site I go to.

That's how they stream them back, yes.
But working with flv flash video files is difficult - I still can't figure out hoe to view one on my computer after I've rendered it.

I've had my DVX-100B for about six months and I love it, except that after lots of experimenting I am still having trouble creating high-quality internet-streamable video files.

I generally edit in Final Cut and use Quicktime Conversion to export the finished project as H.264 Quicktime Movie. When I upload to blip.tv or vimeo, I always seem to have the same glitch, horizontal lines that appear whenever there is fast action. It looks like an interlacing issue, but it happens even with footage I shoot in 24P or 30P. (Too see what I'm talking about, check out http://8thmuse.blip.tv). Blip.tv converts the file to Flash, but it also makes the file available for streaming in the original .mov form. When I watch it that way, the problem is not quite as bad as in the flash version, but it's still there.

I have the same problem if I upload to vimeo: http://www.vimeo.com/2012539 . It seems to be worse when I shoot in 24P than 30P but I'm not sure. It happens with well-lit footage as well as low-light footage.

I understand that any compression will reduce quality, but I think there must be a way to improve this, because it doesn't seem right that the videos I shot on my old consumer 1-chip DV camera actually look better online than the one's I've shot with the dvx.

Do I need to be shooting differently, compressing differently, or ? Any advice would be appreciated.

JCAST,

I am having the exact same issue I thought it was because I was using Final Cut Express with no dropdown but maybe I'm doing something wrong too...

You guys are getting an interlace setting set wrong somewhere along the line.
I have been stung by missing a box somewhere in the FCP and Premier export pages that says something like "Apply De-Interlace" or "De-interlacing".
You DO NOT want to de-interlace progressive video. (It's already de-interlaced)
When I missed this, I got similar horizontal interlacing lines.
Also DO NOT upload at a different frame rate from your video.

My current problem is occasional horizontal flickers or flashes that look like skips in the playback or too-slow screen redraws.
I don't know if it's just the video card in my computer or not, but I don't see this on other's vimeo playbacks.
Can you see the flickers?

Hey DP,

I didn't notice any flickers or skips...It looked great!

Your video is the type of quality I want to get. What do you do to export your videos?

I've done a fair amount of exporting from 24P footy, but lately have been playing around with shooting in 60i. I generally shoot snow skiing...anyone have any thoughts on what they like best in terms of fps and/or exporting files. I'm constantly learning, so anything is appreciated.
thanks

RebelD,

OK..it must be a slow video card issue. Thanks for the props.

I start with my full uncompressed AVI file and compress to h.264 using Premier Pro or QUICKTIME PRO.
I choose video>to>iPod at whatever the highest video quality settings are. In QT it's "Export for Web" then choose "Desktop h.264 1.5Mbps max data rate"

In premier you have a zillion options but you need to keep the image size at 640X480 or bigger if it's a 16:9 project. And MAKE SURE you set the frame rate to the same as your project was.
BEWARE - in Adobe's MEDIA ENCODER you have to select the "Output" tab in the far upper left and UNCHECK the "Deinterlace" box. Otherwise you'll kill your quality by deinterlacing already deinterlaced video.

Then just a straight upload to Vimeo.

THis helping any?
