Here is a picture of me so you know who to kill if you hate my review/feedback of your film.

Now my masterplan was to record my feedback because I thought it would be 'easier' than typing it all... yeah right! So instead I have recorded this weird and ridiculous audio epic that reviews all the films in the festival. Be prepared for lots of 'ums, erms' and me going 'nuah nuah' and my er evil Scottish accent as there was no way i was going to edit it all out the voice track! It comes in at a considerable length.

I wander off on tangents and will probably make little sense!

So if I missed your film in my review thingy let mw know and ill post - i will reiterate that i mean no offence (if I offend you) and am happy to discuss my ideas/reviews/feedback here on the thread :P

PART 2 - www.newagemedia.co.uk/LossFestReview02.mp3 (http://www.newagemedia.co.uk/LossFestReview02.mp3) (The Last Hours, One Tear For You, Hitoribochi and Take - with some general discussion of suicide representation and theatre acting hehe)

Fast Mirror http://www.eefilm.com/lossfest/lawri...stReview02.mp3 (http://www.eefilm.com/lossfest/lawriejaffa/LossFestReview02.mp3)

If your crazy enough to listen to all of it hehe, it does get better as i go along (as i er learn to speak to a microphone) I ASSURE you this is not some crazy attempt to start some new audio er film review thing lol!

(Thanks to Puck we have a list) any missing films will be reviewed tonight GMT)

BUT, can you PLEASE post a listing of the order you reviewed flicks and a timecode corresponding to that? So that I can skip the films I havent watched and go hear what you've said about certain ones?

lawriejaffa
03-15-2009, 10:44 PM
Oh i know i did mean to but my goodness it just took so long to record and bahhh hehe!

I will eventually get to putting up a list of time codes (okay i won't really but i know i should hehe!)

For you chaps thanking me for the reviews - its a pleasure, you after all went to the effort of producing short films and i was desperate to enter this year but had to finish a gig and was too late! bah!

Hey Lawsuit Boy thank you for your kind compliments ;) if you think that picture is great wait till you see the portrait i have outside my office muhahaha!

Yep, in fact if the USA ever invades Scotland it wouldn't be long before Scots pulled down my statue too!

In fact if I ever come across as a little bit condescending then i find this pic immediately calms people down, and they see what a nice megalomaniac I am lol

(Anyway i'll stop prattling on!)

Wow, this is some great stuff. Your contribution is commendable.

I did a really dumb thing though and lost it at 59 min. Any way to jump back to that point? I really want to hear all of this.

And thanks for the kind words on "The Fishermen"

Really great insight on the films and fest. Thanks for doing this.

Oh you could just download the audio Alex by right clicking and save target as! - and yes ill be in touch with you soon mon amie, and thanks glad you liked the review :P - I didn't know you had written that one's script too - you see you will notice i quite embarassingly don't mention the director's names (As i couldnt remember them all of them)

I just reviewed the films according to my personal taste, and thats important too for anyone that feels a bit miffed with my opinions - that its just the opinion of one (amazing genius) but you know, just one hehe.

You're the kind of megalomaniac that I simply cannot help but marvel. Now now, you're no megalomaniac, but a dapper and "kindly" fellow that gives really well designed and critical analysis of our humble films. And I'm sure we all appreciate it. I certainly do for the perspective of someone abroad as well as entertainment value. Very charming stuff.

Thanks for the review. As a cowriter, I take any comments towards story or thematic principles to heart and learn from recommendations given. In that our subject matter was very in line with Heroes, we attempted to branch away from some of the stereotypes associated with heroes and villains. It was Chris who originally conceived the "super soldier" aspect, which I felt definitely seperated Blackout from the "natural evolution" reasons behind Heroes and X-men. The problem with Superhero films is that they are all derivative of each other on some level. I can remember in the script stage, Chris even mentioned the Keene Act from The Watchmen. So from that, we rolled a bit.

After some back and forth, we both felt the script was where we wanted it, though we both knew that some of the devices we used had been used before. Originality died with the wheel, I always say.

So as a writer, I whole-heartedly thank you for digging into the story depths of the film in your review. I can't comment on anything other than that, so thank you.

While I'm here, as the actress in Tiny Dancer, I want to thank you, lawriejaffa, for thinking I'm cute haha. You made me blush, sir :dankk2:And also for the kind words on the film. I'm downloading now, and yep, it's taking forever ... averaging around 23kb/sec. If no one else has offered to host this yet, just PM me & I can put it up for you.

On a side note, I don't see LAST TOUCH in the list of reviews, so while I still want to listen to this for your thoughts on the other films, I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on LAST TOUCH. Speaking of which, I wonder if having my film at the end of the list (near last entry) is hurting it? Seriously, Lawrie...I cannot help but think of Charles Foster Kane when I see this image.

Actually ironically that is what I get called by the local papers around here, the Orson Welles of 'Dysart' the coastal town I stay in hehe.

I run a company quite competitively too hehe (not as much as Kane) but my passion is for the art not the $$$ :) - (life is way way too short for abundant $$$ over abundant art) - now thats Bourgeious sentimentality but i'll stick to my guns (so long as i have enough for rent, ties waistcoats and food - in that order of importance.)

Indeed there is nothing more apolagetic to the generous male frame than a tightened waistcoat.

Right! time to go off and review these last films!!

Glad your passion's for the art and not the money. Money's only a game of manipulation that must be played in order for us filmmakers to create the films we want to see. A Marxist might also say it's the root of all evil in contemporary society, heh (which isn't too far off, but also not quite right).

It's so funny you're called that. I can really see it. The arthouse tycoon Lawrie Brewster! And now I'm thinking about Brewster's Millions, haha.

I love your style, Lawrie. Stay classy.

There have been some video reviews in the past. Only a handful from what I recall.
This is really great though! I got a real kick out of listening to them today.

Remember to save target as!

Okay Part 2 Hurrah!

Features a slightly more long winded review ooooof

The Last Hours, One Tear for You, Hitoribochi, Take !

Now er I do go off on some tangents a little bit (teenie weenie weeeenie bit) that i think might hold some interest to the other participants of the festival (I blether a bit about the potrayal of romantic suicide/depression) and theatrical styles of performance.

Not that im any kind of genius that warrants such immediate attention but just that it touches on a lot of the themes shared by all the films ;)

Oh and any chance of someone putting a mirror for this too/ If required gents?

Ah well your obviously a romantic like me lawsuitboy (jon!) good for you. Even when matters of financial circumstance do force some compromise its vital to hold onto that priceless commodity of artistic ambition!!

Of course that artisitic ambition is netiher exclusive to arthouse films, but can be expressed in genre movies too. In fact i would argue it is VITAL to those genre films that can as a result of artistic value - stand out against dumbed down mainstream fare.

I will be attending the Dead by Dawn Horror film festival in the UK, and it is frequented by THEE core market demographic for independent horror films. That is passionate, genre loving fans, who will have the open mindedness and love for thier genre to give indy fare a second look - in the desperate hope that they will have taken ideas so bold, that mainstream fare wouldn't dare too.

I sometimes think that art has this weird 'taboo' element in American film (like calling someone a 'liberal' haha) Ridiculous and weird to me. In the UK, the fusion of artistic value does not automatically define a film as arthouse or 'worthy' but as innovative entertainment.

A good example of a microbudget film that achieved this from the UK (with Lionsgate signing) is 'The Vanguard' by Mathew Hope - a good American example, is 'Five Eyes Across' similarly signed with Lionsgate. Both films with bold artistic ideas...

The very worst (and i think incorrect attitude) is the cynical notion that within independent film you can create rubbish and it will sell. (lol such a market theory doesnt even work for pornography!) ;)

I think the whole idea of an audio review is great, especially by someone that can communicate clearly. I wish we had more people do this! If you enjoyed your review, you could take the clip and post it on your own website (as long as you get permission). Perhaps in the next festival, we will see more of these.

Yeah maybe that would be cool - sure thing well i mean folk are free to quote/sample me for use in promoting their film :P anything to help my filmmaking brothers :)

I had originally intended to actually recorded video of me doing this (i will do for my twilightfest feedback as that will be hilarious) but i was on deadline for a commission so didnt have time to set it up. (not that it would look overproduced haha it is just me sitting blethering)

That's hilarious!Yeah, I wished I could take credit for it but it was posted by Sean Flannery (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/member.php?u=38721)

He did three reviews for TimeFest. I decided not to be self serving and post the O2 review but he did them for O2 (http://www.elpricko.com/video/o2nick.wmv), R.P.D.M. (http://www.elpricko.com/video/rpdmnick.wmv) and The Dustin Rogan Project (http://www.elpricko.com/video/tdrpnick.wmv). They were all pretty funny.

lawriejaffa
03-16-2009, 07:54 PM
They are hilarious hehe! However i think mine will be 'straight' lol - because often there either funny (and i love what he did!) Or there way over pimp'd (like the zucuto conversations with all those crazy tracks!)

What i would hope is to present an intellectual platform for the films which they rarely get a chance i think - for a good critical examination (not that i can lol but i'd at least try to)

Blaine
03-16-2009, 08:00 PM
Yes, those were played for laughs. After listening to your recorded reviews, I think you'd do a great job on the video reviews. You have a great critical style. Perhaps it's the Scottish accent (or just my love for single malt Scotch) but I think you can get away with some harsh but honest criticism. And that's a good thing. You give some good points for the filmmakers to consider.

Malt Whisky - good man! Now i'm a little er girly for that (though its traditional to drink that with some clients in Scotland - in business so i have acquired a taste for it!)

I like Port, Brandy and Dark Rum! But comically when i'm out (dazzling ladies er...) I tend to er drink silly things like cocktails - 'hiiiits like whisky taaaastes like candy' - bad i know!

Yep some criticism may sound a little harsh though I go to great pains to stipulate that its just an opinion, and i add a little humour to it er hopefully (that or my scottish accent though i would have what is considered a posh-ish scottish accent) Real scots sound like Wullie from the Simpsons! Our American ambassador! Yey ;)

Hey no probs Frank was a pleasure, ive actually got a wee scene i wanted to send you from a student short of mine (that self destructed) that had some linkage to yours with the theatrical influence (that i percieved).

Nice film, and a nice change in the fest. Was your actress actually British then or/

Wow, I really liked your review! I couldn't stop laughing when you started to just say the title "Gangs and Gangsters" and began to chuckle. And yes, it was a buncha nerds trying to mess with a subculture... and the Weird Al song was White and Nerdy =D

Thanks for liking the final monologue and the metaphors that went along with it. Next time I'll try and get the casting right and produce a closer/more realistic feel for the characters. I'm glad you at least got a chuckle out of an unconvincing yet zany film.

Thanks for the review, it was politely critical.

Actualy she is the daughter of a Persian mother and a German dad, that grew up in Jordan, visiting a Brittish school. Thatīs where the distinct accent comes from. :)

LMAO... I couldn't resist...it was just a moment of inspiration. I watched the film (which I quite enjoyed) and it just seemed to fit.

I thought it was the least I could do. I (and by that I mean all of us here on DVXuser) really appreciate you taking the time to watch, review & comment on all the films. Good or bad, it's these comments that will make us all better filmmakers.

I, for one, have always enjoyed your rapier wit and excellent sence of humor!
Cheers to you.
