View Full Version : Anyone watching LossFest entries on a BIG screen?

Chances are that most of the entries will not go beyond the computer screen, but I was wondering how would they look on a larger screen a much larger screen. Could the composition hold up? Not the quality of resolution. I know that would get muddy unless there were HD downloads.

The composition has a bigger relevance on the big screen. That is where we all ultimately want to see our films.

I was surprised how my opinion changed on some films, yet many held their ground and look very cinematic on the big screen.

Has anyone else tried this?

Only on a nineteen inch monitor. Don't have the luxury for that in a college dorm. I don't think it would change my perception of a film from this fest drastically though. Wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.

The only problem is that the majority of them are compressed so small that if they're blown up, I'm going to HATE watching it because of the harsh pixelation and decadence of the image. If it's smaller, I'll see more. That sounds weird, but it's true, haha.

I've watched all of them on my 32" 1080p monitor. Too many distractions to watch things on a computer. I'm really starting to hate watching content on a computer.

Same here. I've been finding my computer screen to be too distracting, even with QuickTime's full screen view. My peripheral vision catches too many things outside the monitor screen. I could probably move in closer to make it feel like a 32" screen, but then I'll be uncomfortable. Sometimes there is no option like Jon is saying and the resolution is better.

I'm into the composition and the dance cameras perform in a scene. Too close, no good. Too far, no good. And many things in between. I'm sure many of the DPs here know what I'm talking about.

BTW, Jon. Your film looks pretty nice on a big screen.

I've been watching the entries on my 50" Pioneer 9G signature Kuro monitor. It has an incredible video processor. So many of the shorts looks very good, Stupendous, Last Touch etc.

I'm watching them Fit-To-Screen on my Laptop. I'm too lazy right now to hook everything up to the big screen.

32" television. the compression doesnt hurt as much as most of us fear. everything still looks pretty nice considering. Some compositions definitely do hold up and they look more cinematic than on the computer monitor. some.. just don;t work

Are you kidding? You're in LA. Almost everyone I know out there has a screen that drops down from the ceiling in there living room with everything attached. :)

Bwahahaha. Not me. And I've got the Florida St/UNC game on it with the sound off.

Native size for me. I see compression artifacts as it is!

Headphones as well. They are a must.

Precisely. No point in blowing up an already supremely compressed video. Plus good sound, I agree, is a must for viewing, or else you're going to miss things and give a film a false rating.

Aw, thanks Sprocketboy. I really appreciate that, especially for having shot on a dvx-100a. :)

Loss Fest should totally sell a DVD of the top 20 or something...

Of course, they might run into copywright issues. That mint box one had lots of Star Wars logos and stuff.

They haven't put out a DVD since SciFest.

I watch em on a 24" 1080 computer crt.

I watched 3 or 4 in full screen mode, but changed to original size, cause the artefacts where on my nerves.

Some of the shorts look like they were playing off a VHS player and others were really muddy. The ones that looked best had a 800 x 450 native size. They filled the screen and looked rather nice.

The big screen reveals a lot of things and the puny computer monitor hides a lot. If our ultimate goal is to have our films projected on a big screen, why not film it for that medium. A third of the films I viewed out of 25 films looked good for projection.

I am noticing that the DOF adapters are killing a lot of shots. Learn how to use them properly. Get someone to focus pull and do a rehearsal. I dread it when it goes in and out of focus and sometimes stays slightly out of focus. Its harder to notice that on a tiny computer screen that is forgiving. Its not because the quality looks muddy, do I think its out of focus, I have other shots in the same film to compare it to.

I'm sure "Again to Return" will look awesome if I vertically flip my 46" LCD :-)
I really like the creativity of that film!!!

The only one I've watched on the big screen 124" projection is Chalk Dog as we've burned a dvd. It looks great!

There a a few I might bring down to look at... Model/photographer, plasebo, etc...
