My local stores and B&H have been out of the Canon LP-E6 for a long time with no delivery date in sight. It is harder to get an original Canon battery than the 5D Mark II.

I just checked eBay and they have a few different knock off batteries. The price compared to the Canon is dirt cheap. Have any of you tried these off brand batteries? I've bought import radio flash poppers and they have worked great. Hopefully these batteries will also be great.

Here are a couple links to give you an idea of what I'm thinking about going with. Any thoughts?

Yeah I have them and use them...work great! Got 2 plus a charger for what seemed like nothing...been using them for months!

It does not report the battery life, so you have no idea when the camera is about to die though...just swap every few hours and keep rolling! You also have to click, some warning message when the camera comes on...just hit "OK" and your off.

I use the battery grip. My battery info page page shows the life left, shutter counter, but it also says that it can not communicate with the battery. I'm wondering if using the battery grip will make any difference with these off-brand batteries.

Which brand did you go with? What is the life compared to the Canon LP-E6?

Hey Dan I just checked the links, seems legit. What kind of life are you typically getting with these? 2-3 hours? I just ordered our 5D MKII and EX3 today through our money guy today, but I know he'll never get us batteries off of eBay, so I'll get them myself.

I have used generic batteries from ebay for my 40d. The only problem i found is that after a while you cannot get full charge anymore. Considering the price it could be a quick fix but not a reliable solution as they can die on you anytime, usually when you really need them.

I've used those No-name LP-6E batteries since Jan. with/out grip. It worked like a champ and last as long as Canon one, I have shoot 2 full 16Gb CF of picture and video and review in one day with those two and still running.. There is a little annoy (liked others mention above) that you need to confirm the "non-canon" battery and no voltage indicator, but I can live with that for 150 bucks less. Good for back up.

Off brand batteries DO NOT have the safety features of brand name batteries. A quick Google search should reveal scary images of exploding lithium cells on airplanes and the aftermath of burned holes in the floors of apartments and maybe it will make you think twice about the "savings" of those Chinese batteries... ;-)

From past experience, I also have 3 non-functional Li-Ion batteries (off brand batteries for my DVX100, remember those?) and I am still not sure what to do with them or where to recycle them, years later... And, I can't live with the guilt! On the other hand, I have never had an OEM battery fail. So, I quit buying knock off's.

Personally, I picked up some of those overpriced Canon batts on eBay for around a 100 bucks each.

Peace of mind = priceless!

i bought them off ebay as well.. seem to work ok in the camera but wont charge in the normal canon charger ( so you will need to buy one of those too ) and the camera doesnt show status, which doesn't seem like a big deal until the battery just goes dead in the middle of a shoot ( or a video recording )..

Hmm. Maybe they're not so bad after all. So many glowing reviews!

Has anyone sold their original charger and battery on eBay, yet? Seems like that would be a good way to reduce the cost of a 5D Mk II by around $150 or so. That would go a long way towards off brand replacements.. Anyone here have enough confidence in the off brand stuff to try it?
