I'm looking at these two Mattboxes for my EX1 + Letus + Letus Rods. One is the Redrock with Swingaway (750 Dollars), the other is the Geardear (340 Euros) for

I like the swingaway on the Rerock but I also like the price on the GearDear.
Give me some advice here.

I just got to play with the Redrock Mattebox and what I can tell you is that it is extremely robust and built well! The only draw back is that it's a heavy Mother and makes it extremely front heavy making handheld a pain, but you seriously cannot get a cheaper priced quality mattebox. My only advise if getting the redrock is to get the shoulder harness for it so its more stable for handheld...unless of course you dont plan on doin that!

Red Rock is by far the best matte box under $1,200.00 on the market. And I don't even own one, I had to buy before the RR was released. Geardear is okay for the $$ but the RR is in another league.

Curiously I'm in the same boat here! I'm still evaluating those 2 matteboxes for a couple of months now and still didn't decide what to do :(
Yes, RR can sit in another league as you all stated but GearDear has some pretty advantages besides price.
- It's the lighter mattebox available on the market and that's a huge pro when you think to go handheld.
- It's not a swingaway design but it's modular. You can grow with the system and it's the one that lets you work with Canon XH-A1 iAF sensor when you are not using a 35 adapter.
- You can both mount it on rods or direct to your camera by bayonet mount.
- It's WAYYYYY cheaper to put it right after an accident. Once again, it's modular and you can simply buy the pieces you have damaged.
Besides that, I'm even evaluating to purchase an Idian kit. One friend of mine bought one and it's really neat for the money. I never had a cinevate matteboc but I've already read some users saying that the Indian one is better built than Cinevate's!!!!
To finish... I like the RR mattebox, but I really don't know if I'm wiling to pay 700€ for a piece of kit that simply don't had 700€ to my image!
Well, back to the board again...

I considered the Geardear but it just looked a little too homemade for my taste. YMMV

I just bought the Geardear because it is lighter and half as expensive and the Redrock and you don't need to buy any add-ons for use with an Adaptor. I had the Geardear representative on the phone and he was very friendly and helpful.

How are you going to line that ugly Geardear Mattebox up with your Letus Adapter and whatever lenses you are mounting?
