so this disk cache thing, I know of it, am I supposed to empty it every now and then or something to make things run smoothly?

when AE starts acting funny, purging the cache sometimes helps.....
if you are getting memory errors during renders, you can set the cache to purge itself every few frames during render. this is done in the "secret" menu in prefs. hold down the shift key and go to prefs. pick any pref and click. then go to the pulldown menu where you can access all the other pref panels. there you will see "secret". i set mine to purge every frame. slows down renders slightly but reduces errors almost completely.
