Let's say I'm shooting on location and fill up a 64 GB P2 card with AVC-INTRA and I needed to get the proxy files to the editor ASAP who is going to start an edit that afternoon. Can they be emailed or uploaded to an FTP? How big are the proxy files?
Also, are they frame for frame timecode accurate to the main/master files? Could the editor effectively use the proxies just like an offline in Avid and then reconnect the proxies with the AVC-INTRA master footage later?
thank you

I assume you're making proxies with the camera?
I use ProxyMill to generate TC accurate proxies with burn in after I offload cards. I just shot an AVC I 100 project with Pilobolus on a HPX 3000, used ProxyMill to generate h.264's afterwards. The editor was on site with his laptop and used the proxies to rough cut the project , then replaced the proxies with the full rez files when he got back to his main edit system.

Yes and Yes. I think you would have to FTP them. (They are QT movies). The proxy files (QTs) have a window burn on them. I don't believe they have Time code that can be read by an editing system.:2vrolijk_08:

Wondering if anyone knows if there's a good proxy encoding system for P2 out there that works on OSX 10.4. I have the HPX170, 500 and 3000 and am always outputting TC burn footage from FCP, would love to create low res proxy files for directors directly from P2 without having to bring in the footage to FCP. I know proxymill only works with 10.5...
Anyone?

Here is a link to the P2 proxy card white paper. I believe it's built into your cameras.

For cameras that don't have Proxy capability, take a look at Proxy Mill, from Imagine Products.

I thought the HPX300 was Proxy capable? If not, which Panasonic cameras are? I was reading about a proxy p2 card (just like a p2 card) that proxy files will record onto. There was this whole workflow designed around it. Including "offline edit" and iphone dailies.

The HPX300 can do proxy with the optional AJ-YAX800G proxy card. It will record proxies on the P2 card and if desired onto the SD card as well. The only limitation is that it will only do this in 60P or 60i. Don't ask me why not 24P, I really don't know, but generally when they do something like this it has something to do with memory in the camera.

Jan,
Can Final Cut import the YAX800 proxies now; I recall there were some codec licensing issues a while back.

I know you can change the proxy suffix to .mov and the will import with no problems. And no the HPX500 does not have the ability to take the proxy card.

Please all, Check out ProxyMill from imagineproducts.com It's a fine product that will generate proxy's in a variety of modes, as well as write proxy's back to the proxys folder in an archived P2 Card Image. It puts time code burns in the movies and does a whole lot of useful stuff.

I do agree with you Tom, the Imagine Products ProxyMill is hard to beat. Have the proxies they way you want them.
