I have a background image of a rough texture and have a image on top of that. I want the image to take on the wrinkles etc. of the background but can't remember how to do it? Thanks in advance.

Put an instance of the texture on top of the picture, and change the blending mode to Soft Light, Overlay, or any of the Lightening or Darkening blending modes if you want just highlights or shadows from the texture.

Wasn't there a way where you copy the background image as a gray scale and use that somehow?

You can use a displacement map filter to distort the 'visible' image, and give an impression that it is warped by the 'grey' image.

It's been a while since I've done that, so you'd have to look for a tutorial to get the detailed usage correct.

Also the texture filter may help.
