This is used with flashes for still photography but I tried it out with my dvx too. I guess it does work it's just very impractical. I held up a worklight where the flash is normally supposed to go. Extra light from the worklight escaped though so it wasn't only coming from the ring light. There's a picture from a still camera as my profile picture that was taken with the same ringlight but with a flash instead.
