getting that feeling too. whch I suppose is good in terms of viewing and feedback... will seem less daunting for us to watch and comment on everything.

Maybe people didn't like the Loss idea as much as a zombie fest etc. What is the next fest? There is not even a thread going for that this time is there?

Maybe people didn't like the Loss idea as much as a zombie fest etc. What is the next fest? There is not even a thread going for that this time is there?

I actually feel that the Loss theme, being so broad, allowed for more avenues of story ideas as opposed to something of a specific genre in which certain conventions and norms must be present.

I also think it will be easier to give better feedback on each film with less films in the fest. I'd like to see more, but the truth is that some might get less of a response than others because of time constraints. I'm sure every one of us are busy outside of the fest in one way or another.

Regardless, I still look forward to seeing all of the entered films.

Jason Ramsey

Don't forget that most people upload at the last possible moment.

Like all fest you can do a lot with the themes. It doesn't have to be a sad story for sure. Plus like Jason said people wait to the last minute to upload.

i was?

This fest feels different than the last one. I think the Twilight was my first one so I was really excited. And this fest I'm really excited.:Drogar-Evil(DBG): I just hope I have improved.

It started off with like 80 films I wonder how many will actually get in?

Nick_Lee

I don't understand the art of finishing early. I'm supposed to be filming right now but my friend just got pulled over.....so...I have no idea what's going on. Either I'll finish filming...or edit what I have and have a very holey short.

I kept tinkering and changing things to the point of OCD. I had to upload or I would have Effed my movies up.

I'm guessing we'll see around 40 entries.

we shoudl take bets. I'm guessing 30 tops.

ZazaCast
03-06-2009, 11:24 PM
I would hope there are more than 30...there are 110 film threads started. The last two fests had 68-70 entries.

I say 41 films

In case you guys haven't recognized the pattern.

Fall = Dark Fiction / Horror
Winter/Spring = Humanist / Less Genre-y / Character
Spring/Summer = Fun/Popcorn/Genre

Also, people are just busy this time of year. It seems to go
FALL - itching to do something all Summer.
SPRING - man I'm got my fill in Fall, plus I'm dealing with .... whatever.
SUMMER - why the hell didn't I do anything for SPRING DVXfest. Definately entering in June.

Loss Fest is in keeping with Drama Fest and Love fest in Spring. No, the numbers aren't as big as Horror Fall or Popcorn Summer, but ratio of quality work to noise is high and it's probably responsible for the most growth in the members fest to fest. So we'll keep serving the vegetables in spring along with the junk food in Fall and Summer.

Plus remember Zak peed on himself when we announced Loss Fest. :) Some members patiently wait it out while we run around blowing up things to really dig into the spring fest and make some amazing work.

You can still pretty much do anything genre in any fest. Ya just gotta be creative. As long you don't do a full frontal male nudity required element, I'm in for whatever.

I would hope there are more than 30...there are 110 film threads started. The last two fests had 68-70 entries.Yes, but the activity within those threads speaks volumes. There are always last minute surprise entries, but not 30 or 40 of them.

I don't think we'll get numbers even close to the last few Festivals.

That's alright though, I can take my time during the viewing process.

03-08-2009, 09:41 PM
I'll be uploading mine tomorrow, most likely. Got a clean rendered MOV at 45.7MB, and looks good at 640x360 rez, but I stretched it out to 1280x720, and still looked fairly good ... so I'm going to try and see just how much more data I can squeeze and come in under 50MB (going by what it says on my desktop, for file size, that cool?) and have this at the full 720P frame size.

Also don't care much for how Quicktime seems to kind of wash things out a tad, so I'm punching up contrast JUST a hair for Quicktime, using the filters provided in QT7 Pro.

Jason Ramsey
03-08-2009, 09:52 PM
Norm, yes that's cool. Keep in mind that the KB amount would actually come in over 50,000 KB and still be 50 megs, as 1024 KB = 1 MB.

So, you are looking at a ceiling of 51,200KB to be at exactly 50 MB's if my math is right.

Honestly, I think I was the very first person to have filmed their short & have it "in the can", and the very last one to get it submitted in. In some ways, this was my oddest production yet.

Jason Ramsey
03-09-2009, 12:51 PM
March 13th is technically the date the films *would* go live. However, we are making every effort to be well ahead of this target.

Since almost every film has been screened and approved already, and we're not even an hour past the deadline, that's going to help a lot.

Have a handful of films to go through still. Larry (in the meantime) is beginning work on a few code tweaks, etc... then he'll have to get zip packages made up (since some folks prefer those), get all the films and zips pushed to our various mirrors, confirm as best we can that the films all made their journey's to the mirrors intact, and then generate the viewing pages for each film, with poster, description, etc...

anything before the 13th should be considered gravy, but we are already well ahead of pace. I make no promises, but it is my goal to try to get the viewing up by tonight, or (if not) hopefully tomorrow, barring any kind of craziness or glitches happening.

Just try to be patient. Trying to turn around 60+ films in under 24 hours is quite a feat, but we're going to try our best.

It's in Larry's hands now... so, if we don't succeed in reaching the accelerated target.. err... it's his fault

Give them another read: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=153437

We're going to do exhibition films a little differently this time by the way. Something I've wanted to do for a while, so we're going to get it incorporated for this fest.

exhibition films (of course) are not eligible for prizes, and will be listed separately from the rest of the films, but you will be able to rate the films still. This is more just for the filmmkers benefit and knowledge so they can see how their film stacked up against the rest and what the masses thought, not just what was typed in their thread. I think this is beneficial, and not at all harmful to the actual "competitive" part of the process.

Ratings are a good thing even if for no other reason that to have them.

geoff needs to upload contact me or larry and upload his film to our server pending approval for exhibition.

We still are the final say on whether a film will be allowed for exhibition or not :)

I don't see a problem with it, just would like for him to follow the proper protocol.

Films that will likely be accepted for exhibition:
A film that was made specifically for this fest and embraces the theme or genre of the fest, but:
may not have fit in the alloted run time of (in this case) 6:10.
did not get completed and uploaded in time before the deadline.

etc.

Hope you understand why we dont' just let anyone decide they will be exhibition, as we have had problems with that in the past.

We are more than happy to host his film for him on our servers though, and have it be included in the festival process.

Filesize is 6 minutes per 50 megs, so a longer exhibition entry would be expected to maintain that ratio.

Please pass that along to him.

Thanks.

Well, the old voting system it wouldn't have worked... But, with the current rating system, it makes perfect sense and embodies exactly what one of the main purposes of the new system is all about. Give the filmmaker as much data as possible to gauge audience response. Both in anonymously given ratings (numbers) and direct feedback/reviews in their threads.

There are 4 time zones in the lower 48. There is an hour difference between each. Since you are in the Central Time Zone use this to convert.

Pacific -2
Mountain -1
Central 0
Eastern +1

If you're at 2 a.m. it's 12 midnight on the west coast.

Pacific Time, which is the West Coast. Ramsey should have said PDT since we are now on Daylight Saving Time. 8 am tomorrow morning will be 10 am CDT (not CST).

8 am Pacific time = 10 am Central time.
