How safe is it to do this? Connecting an external hard drive to the camera and copying the P2 data over to it?

This question not limited to the HPX 300. But I just wanted to get some testimonials of your experience with it.

I am interested, too.
Also: can you dump from one card while capturing on the other? or is it necessary to be in USB-host mode like with the HVX? then our normal USB-to-Go disk would do the same job as always.
