I've been scowring these forums for about a week now in search of the best design of a home built DOF adapter, i was thinking about just going with a very simple linear design.

I was wondering from the people here who have experience building adapters if it is possible to build the types pictured below from simple products including some parts from older, broken SLR cameras. I have the feeling it wouldn't be tooooo too expensive or that hard, but I would like to get more thoughts on this. from anyone that has tried or just knows a lot about these.

If it was easy, no one would be buying the adapters pictured  The amount of money, work and R&D that went into the blade, m2e, ultimate, extreme, brevis, g35, etc is quite extensive.

You can certainly build adapters that use a similar concept as the two you pictured...i.e., spinning GG. I got pretty good results from my DIY spinner. The Flip module is another matter. That would be difficult to do unless you can aquire the proper prisms at a reasonable cost.

Marcel,
is the flip module using a true prism? or mirrors? just thinking i might wanna toy around with the concept and try to make one for my older jvc that doesnt flip the image.

Smoke (on the GG) and mirrors (in the flip module) and there you have it all.:2vrolijk_08:

Ted,
I do know that the flip modules in the SGBlade and in the letus use prisms. I read once where someone attempted to use mirrors but the lightloss was just too great. There was also someone who built a small flip module for a HV30 using easily available prisms, but they are too small to handle the larger cameras.

Thanks Marcel. I wont bother with it then.

Prisms, are the only way to do it properly. Because they can be optically bonded and housed, it means zero alignment issues with very low light loss. The Brevis flip has been prism based from day one. You can certainly build a decent DIY unit but the quest for optical excellence means CNC machining everything, very high quality control, optical coatings, engineered glass etc. Our decision to integrate microprocessor control in the MP.1 was another development we pioneered to both enhance the optical performance but also add power management, low power shutdown etc.
So yes, you can do the DIY thing but the only way we could do the above was by volume, lots of customer support ... and me continuing to drive a 25 year old VW :-)
