I'll be going to Central America shortly (Magagua to Panama), and I'm really wanting to take my D90, however, I also really want to be able to return home with it. I've read about some issues of crime in those areas, and just wanted to get some feedback from those of you are well traveled. Is it worth the risk? And if I do take it, what are some precautions I can take? Thanks so much!

I always take mine. I spent some time in the Philippines last year in areas that you might consider unsavory. I just always keep it strapped around my body so they can't grab and run. If someone is trying more than that they can have it. It's totally worth taking it to have the pictures you get from it, but totally not worth being hurt for a $1000 camera.
Plus if it is stolen, I have insurance. :) Honestly, I'm usually more concerned about my lenses then my bodies. Also, you could take a film body, which are easily replaced.....and fun to shoot IMO.

As Divotdan mentioned, insurance is very important to have. Try not to look geared up. Don't use a bigger or flashier looking lens, if possible stick with a 50 (in general try to travel light in regards to your lenses.) Always have the camera strap around your neck. Don't carry a camera bag looking bag. Don't use lens hoods unless you need it. If you aren't trying to take a picture and someone offers to take a picture of you....well, you get it.

Outside of insurance and agreeing with previous posters I would consider buying a handful of 1 gig cards instead of bringing 4 or 8 gig cards. Always switch them out once full, pocket the full ones, don't place them in your camera bag (thats the first thing they'll steal). This way, at least you keep the memories if they take your camera and bag.
