The "Great magnet" says I can't leave the wilderness just yet :) Somehow I thought I could just forget that stuff and move on but alas...I'm pulled daily into the forest. I am moving in other directions but have recently discovered that my trips to bushworld are something I truly enjoy. It's kinda like therapy for me and free to boot. So I propose this thread devoted to nature and wildlife so those interested can post animals, birds and plants regardless of what camera they use.
I'll start

Amazing Canadian goose shot Starmapper.
I like the topic or category idea much better than particular camera threads. When I first came to this forum a few years ago, I never went to the Nikon or Canon threads because I use Sony and thought it would be boring to read about cameras I don't have or intend to have. I used Minolta for a lot of years and so the Sony alpha dslr's were a opportunity for me to switch to the digital world and still use my lenses, etc. Then one day I cracked open the Nikon thread and was blown away by all that goes on in there. Composition, lighting, techniques galore ... So then I checked the Canon threads and it was the same thing. I started a Sony A700 thread about a year ago when I got that but I really get virtually no activity there. Too bad, I can learn more with more critiqueing. So, for a few months I've been thinking about some topical/category threads and who cares what camera? They all have a shutter and an aperature ... flashes and bells and whistles. Olympus, Nikon, Sony, Canon .... they're all great in their own way. What's better? A Ford? A Chevy? The one that get's you there is the best. :)
Probably too many words to say thanks for starting this thread. I'll be contributing. :)

Thanks Larry...I'm hoping people will help out by posting here with their nature stuff, I like sharing and all but love also to see what others are up to. Though I like the camera specific threads for the info they provide on the make and model of a brand, I feel general areas of interest threads for all are cool too and slightly more open to the average poster who shares an interest in that category.

This was one of those shots that one tries to plan for so when she bolts you'll be ready with the right shutter speed to capture her but then the AF has a hard time locking and you lose your comp for a second and BAM!!! Your shot is compromised from your original plan. When you get the duck back in comp the autofocus is in trouble again. The duck ended up in the top right corner of the shot with her wingtip dangerously close to being out of frame. A really good shot for me would have been an inclusion of the water she just left plus more room extending horizontally out from either wing

I agree. The drops tell the story of her leaving the water on the fly. I think water in the shot may even be redundant.

I tried that once and realized I'm just too lazy to keep it up, providing the EXIf data that is. Having said that, I'm very willing to provide details for specific images, The ones that work for you. I shoot with an Olympus E-3 which is 90% of the time strapped to a Zuiko 70-300mm f4-f5.6 lens. Generally speaking I'm shooting at f5.6 using spot focus and some kind of all in metering. Generally at ISO200 unless it's a quick subject in low light. On board OIS on at all times and I rarely use a tri-pod...Hope that helps a little to get a general feel of my shooting methods. The rest is as minimal as I can get away with in PS, usually a levels tweak then a selective color treatment to make the color pop a little (tried this with the vivid setting in cam and decided my method worked better) Finally unsharp mask in prep for webalization. But yeah ask away on a specific image if you need to

Starmapper, how close do you still get even when using the longest end on your 300mm. I use a 300 too but can't seem to get anywhere near as close as you,, it appears you have "Stealth" mode and can walk right up to these creatures!! A 300mm and a tiny bird even from 10 to 20 feet away still won't get results like yours.
I can crop and zoom some shots but hey, thats cheating and throwing away resolution. Let me know your secret,,,,please!

In the case of the last bird shot singing in the reeds, I was about 20-30 feet away shooting in bright afternoon sun at 1/4000 at ISO 400. I think the key to shooting with a 300 at distance is the high shutter speed. That shot was cropped about 60%. The secret I think to getting close is in choice of location. I shoot in parks and areas where a fair amount of people visit, I think this helps because the animals and birds are not as afraid of humans as they would be way out in wild country. They're still skittish only letting you get so close and too sudden a move will scare them off. Slow easy advances on birds and animals with no sudden movements is my MO. Hope that helps.

Here's an example of getting too close that would normally result in a worthless blurry image. When I hoisted the camera up he was sitting on the branch below but as soon as the auto focus beeped he was gone (as is so often the case) Luckily I was still at 1/4000 and shot anyway getting a reasonable catch.

Thanks for you advice Starmapper, i'mm going bush this weekend too see what I can come up with. My dilemma will be the shuuter speeds you suggest. I could only afford an f4.5 300mm and not an f2.8. Can't really get anything at 1/2000th or more and I don't want to go any higher than ISO400 cause I get too much noise in the shots,,,, anyway in the end it all come down to how much $$$$ you want to pay for the better professional looking shots I guess.
My lens is only worth a few hundred bucks!

My 70-300 mil is f4-5.6 and I get lots of pretty decent action shots at 500-640 sec at ISO 200. You don't have to be up at 4000, it's just a great speed for nailing the action with zero blur. To make my slow 300 work I shoot on really sunny days with lots of light at f5.6 using spot focus on the subject and always trying to get a not so bright background like a wall of distant pine trees or dense foliage which gets smeared into a good DOF usually. The Oly E-3 doesn't like much above ISO 800 before it has noise issues especially in low light.

Def a good way to build up your resume since your work is at a professional level, plus you can win some Canon gear if that interests you (just don't mention your an olympus shooter and erase your exif data :P )

It's actually a Pentax 50mm f1.4 SMC, it just works telephoto on my Olympus E-500 because of the crop factor.
This same crop factor means that my 200-500m Tamron is now a 400-1000mm tamron:

Getting into a Nikon D700 but people aren't exactly lining up to buy the E-3 so it will be a few months yet if I have to scrimp and save. I thought she'd sell quicker. So I guess we'll see a few more post's using this system. If I don't get a fair price, I'll keep it as a rough and tumble outfit :) Either way I'm getting th D700 sometime soon.
Nice bird, what is it?

I really like the first two shots...I'm a sucker for pelicans ever since I watched "Winged Migration". Nice stuff!
My Olympus system is now a memory, I'm using Nikon all the way now. For my nature close up work I'm using a d90 with a 70-300mm because with the DX sensor I'm getting 450mm, not quite the 600mm I got from the Oly but I can live with it.

So that's what the D90 does with the 70-300. It doesn't keep up with the E-3 at all but who would expect it to. Now I'm going to use the D700 for wildlife for a while and see how it performs. Just gonna have to get in closer. Sure wish the lens doubler would work with the 70-300.
