Sorry if this has mentioned before but I couldnt find any info anywhere.
I was wondering if JVC HZ-CA13U adapter will fit onto HPX300? it would be great if it is.
{Yes i know there are many 35mm adapters out there with relay lenses, but none of them allows you to bypass the actual adapter(meaning you still need relay lense+adapter therefore still a long long rig)
EDIT:Actually there is no 1/3 relay lense out there yet, as far as i know letus(and perhaps cinevate) is working on them. But even with a relay lense they still require their adapter(for example Letus 2/3 relay lense solution) unlike the JVC adapter above.

Funny... I was wondering the same thing about the adapter being used on the Panny. I don't see why not though. I figure as long as the 300 has a 1/3 bayonet mount it should be just fine. I've shot two shorts now with a HD250 and that adapter and I like that there are no moving parts(= no sound) and it doesn't require any power. I'm curious to see images from this combo:
HPX300->JVC PL-mount adapter->Superspeeds!!
cheers

It certainly should fit, yes.
As far as "bypassing the adapter", I don't know what you mean there... the HZ-CA13U *is* an adapter. It's an adapter/relay all in one. It's just a different kind of adapter. And it doesn't give you 35mm depth of field, it gives you 16mm DOF.
The CA13U is also an upside-down adapter, but the HPX300 has the "Scan Reverse" function to flip both the viewing and the recording right-side-up, so that'd work out fine. Just be aware that it's not going to give you 35mm DOF. But it will give you 16mm DOF, which is about the same as a 2/3" camera.

Yes, but, as you are using prime lenses it does give you a lot more artistic choice again - from what I have read 0 light loss, and perfect edge to edge.

Ryan, i'd like to see the footage sometime, i am in Vancouver too. did you rent it, or do you own one?

Thanks Barry. I meant that available relay lenses(Letus for example) are entirely seperate pieces from the actual adapter.(2/3 relay+Ultimate+Lense). JVC on the other hand doesnt have a ground glass so i thought it is more like a single lense unit. Technically it is an adapter yes, but in a sense it is not 2 separate entity that needs to be purchased & attached & aligned, you know what i mean...
As for the 16mm JVC choice: I think it is good enough for me. Getting 2/3" DOF from a 16mm prime lense combined with AVC-Intra codec may yield quite an impressive footage. At least that's what I am hoping to.

These frame grabs are from a short we just finished on the weekend. You can also see the short we did last year at www.freakdum.com

Oh, I agree, it could be excellent indeed. I'm just pointing out that it's not going to be the 35mm DOF that people are typically looking for. And it's PL mount, so you're not going to be using Nikon lenses on it, you'll have to get cinema primes. And it costs as much as a Letus Ultimate.
I think it looks like a great piece of equipment, and Tim Dashwood did a highly complimentary 16-page review on it. As long as people understand that it's different from any other adapter on the market and go into it with their eyes open, it could be a quite appealing choice.

Enjoyed the short Ryan, beautiful cinematography; Excellent lighting work me thinks.
Care to comment about your experience with the set up? Since you used it twice you must have liked it. What lenses you used?(Zeiss i guess since you mentioned superspeeds.) Did you try 35mm PL lenses as well? Do you use rods to support the lenses? How was backfocusing?

When/if Letus releases 1/3 relay lense to be used with Ultimate we'll have a better chance comparing the cost. Then again it is not so much apple to apple comparision.
I read Tim Dashwood's well written article, he did the test with a prototype, and there wasnt actual footage to see. After seeing the Ryan's short film i have no doubt it is the shortest way(literally speaking ;)) to appealing digital cinematography.

Setup-wise:
Zeiss Superspeeds (18, 25, 35, 50, 85)
MB20 Mattebox
FF4 Follow Focus
Chroziel Baseplate w/ 15mm studio rods
Sachtler Video20 sticks
I liked the setup quite a bit although I much prefer panasonic gear. I don't own the camera but one of the producers do so it was a matter of tailoring a production rig around what we already had access to. In regard to backfocusing, the JVC pl adapter has a back focus knob which I adjusted before the shoot using a focus chart. Everything worked out fine. The photo is from last year's shoot. The mattebox is the LMB5 clip on and the tripod head is the Sachtler DV20/18 i believe.

So, has anyone tried this yet? I'm very curious about this combo.
