Does anyone have any insurance set up for all of your equipment?
Anyone know of a good provider?

That is a gift Mr Bill, or your kit must be small. what gear does that cover. sounds to good to be true, or has many conditions.

Only about 25,000 in gear, but the liability is 1,000,000. I had checked in LA and NYC and they wanted 500.00 for 1 shoot. Guess I got lucky with this guy.
but then we know AUS is always more expensive.

Hi MrBill,

we have to pay here in OZ around $700AUDpa for a $10.000.000 liability cover alone, that's a minimum we need to cover for our "News" commitments, I'm told by my insurance rep, Us camera guys are a "Tripping hazard". Gear insurance last time I asked was well over $2,000pa and had very specific conditions, like it being secured in a secure location at all times.
I don't insure my gear, I'm as careful as possible with it, with what I've saved in over 20 years in the industry I could buy a new kit.
Insurance can make people careless in my opinion and not make one responsible for what they do and the assessment of risks on the job.
eg, we have paid home insurance for 35years now, with no claims.
also car insurance with no claims, and so the list goes on.
There Sure are some people who are walking disaster's, and lets not forget most insurance guys sales motto, Sell the "Fear".

Cheers

More important than your company is your Agent. I've found this to be the case many times.
I have an independent agent that has me using Zuric.
I forget the exact amounts, but it's about $250,000 in gear and 1 mil in liability plus our studio facility. I pay about $3,000 per year.

At what point do you guys think it makes sense to pay for insurance?

Easy answer,
that's when you can't afford to loose the gear. if your financed to the bilges better safe guard yourself, If you own everything , that's another story. or of your gear is more than three years old, IMO it's not worth insuring unless you still owe money on it)
Liability is important as these days every one wants to sue someone for something.

Hey there MrBill,

Can you be more specific on what's covered? Theft, damage, etc? Any info on past claim payment history?

I was recently thinking of adding a rider to my homeowner's policy to cover my gear when your post just caught my eye.

Thanks!

All of it is covered on my equipment, Theft, Fire, loss due to terrorist acts, etc.
I also believe it covers rental equipment--loss etc, which is usually required by the rental houses here in the U.S.

The big thing for me was getting the liability for the crew and clients. In case one of them decided to trip and fall and break a leg.:furious3:

They do ask about past claims. but since I haven't had insurance in the past--no claims.

Thanks. Actually I was wondering what the insurance company's history of paying claims has been. In other words if, God forbid, you did end up filing a claim with them, how reliable would they be in paying it?

Don't know any way to check on that except ask the sales rep. The actual insurance company is Continental Casualty Co./ guess it's a matter of trust and contracts.

I've heard that some companies here in OZ just source Secondhand gear and replace the item , or they get a demo item as cheap as.
They are in the business of making money, not keeping us happy.
can't see the Insurance guys any different in other locations, Maybe if you paid a for a premium cover that stipulated , "New replacement", you may be good to go.

read and try to understand the fine detail if you can.
