Hello,
Does anybody have a workflow suggestion if the goal were to shoot with the hmc 150 but end up with a finished product in SD? I'm currently converting with toast 9(AIC) and editing with FCE..
Thanks

Also need workflow advice to final output SD.
A guy I do a lot of work for just bought the HMC-150, but at least for awhile, the final output will still be SD DVD.
What's the quickest/easiest way to go about this??

I have done the same workflow to dvd as working with dv.
edit in AIC or your transcoded format then output via compressor to mpg2 dvd. looks great.
fieldreportermf seeing you are on FCE you can use toast to create dvds.

I just do my projects as HD and when they are done I export them in a SD format. I use premiere pro so if I export as an AVI or MPEG its ready for DVD . I find this to work best since it is taking the video from its very original source and does the down convert and keeps as much of the color and detail as it can.
I am not too familar with FCE but Im sure that you must have export options.

I should clarify:
One camera will be the 150, but other cams are still shooting SD. This means that in one timeline (FCP 6) I'll need to edit the various footage together. ?

I think quickest and easiest would be to downrezz the footage from the 150 to match the SD cameras. Faster rendering times in the end that way during editing as well. You'll lose quality this way though.

Shooting AVCHD but still working with DV?
please download MainConcept AVCHD to DVCProHD transcoder for PC from Panasonic
username is p2avchd and password is khxr6. The software will transcode to AVI file.
Direct link is at the end of this page (http://www.panasonic.com/business/provideo/avchd-home.asp) ;) You can also read more about "USING MAINCONCEPT AVCHD TO DVCPRO TRANSCODER" here (ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/Drivers/PBTS/papers/green_avccam_combined.pdf).

so if you downrezz before you put it in your edit timeline, that's going to be like a really fast, real time edit right? because SD is what I'm doing right now..

I wonder how long does it take to downconvert the hmc150 Files into dv-avi using the panasonic transcoder. Anyone who has tested it?

Yes, i have tested it to see how good it is at downconverting. IMO, you will get much better results if you let the NLE do the downconverting for you. :)

thank you averdahl but have you tested how long it takes? is it as fast as normal dv-capture time? or does it take longer?

It was faster than real time but the quality was not good to justify the use of their transcoder for downconverting the footage. The images where slightly stretched on the x-axis as well during the transcode.
Download it and test how long it takes to transcode and if you are satisifed with its resluts, render times and quality. You are the only one that can find out if you are satisfied with it or not. :)

I need a Panasonic container file (card structure) to test it. I haven't ordered a HMC yet. Anyone who can help me?

Mark Von posted a zip file over at dvinfo.net, I believe. Also in the last few days someone posted another here but I'm not sure where it is...

If I were editing in SD, I'd downconvert to DVCPRO 50 before I edited. HMC150 footage converts beautifully to it and your timeline will be much nimbler for it.
For anyone using Vegas (at least with Raylight), the conversion is quick (with modern hardware), and the results beautiful.
