Our old crew outgrew New England and moved to L.A. a couple of years ago. We're out here visiting them right now and we brought a DVX with us. This is the first time we've all made something together since A Brief Case way back in the day for Sci-Fest. We shot last night and had a blast. Now we can't wait to put this thing together!

Okay, this is the best thing I've seen from you guys since "A Brief Case." I thought that one was the best of SciFest. This one is very funny. You do comedy well.
I'm going to be watching this one again.

No bullsh*t.
Best so far, and I've watched what people are probably assuming are the best.
I suspect we could have another winter lilacs here (or whatever that shoulda' won something flick was called)...
SPOILERS!
I noticed the bumps on the dolly in and thought "f*ckin' amateurs" (think Labowski)... then when it looked like a gay thing I thought "f*ckin' hollywood agenda BS"... then when I heard the first "CUT!" and watched the story of ALL OUR VIDEO MAKING LIVES unfold... I thought "f*ckin' BRILLIANT!"
So far this is the only flick that I can't wait to show to all my friends... CONTENT IS KING!
Great idea... rooted in so much truth... well executed.
Freakin' 291 views... possibly the most entertaining flick in the bunch and freakin' 291 views... don't miss it folks... try to drink anything while you watch this but put anything you don't want sprayed with beverage... in a bag... it's spit-take funny.
My favorite part is the cheesy mustache and the reaction of the guy after being pressured into shaving it... so many layers... it's like "who cares at that point?" and yet, the actor cares, and the grip/slate guy cares... LOL! Seriously.

Genius. Pure genius! This film had me literally laughing out loud. All of us as filmmakers can relate to this. "Where's the couch?!" "F*&k it!" Oh man, some actors are really like that and this piece was clever all the way to the end. Congrats. You guys mad a very memorable film.

I've watched about a third of the films. I would have seen a few more but I keep going back to this one. I hope people realize how well written and performed this is. Comedy is often thought of as lightweight but this seems to get better with each viewing. This is every bit as good as "A Brief Case" in its own right.:thumbup:

I'm up to about 10 films now and the more I watch, the better this one gets. It makes me laugh out loud just thinking about it.
Writing is writing. Don't kid yourself into thinking comedy is easy. This little flick shows some serious skill from everybody involved. I think the incredible film tools (cameras) available to people is slowing down the overall pace of many films. The imagery is so good that people are creating moving pictures, rather then telling tight stories... I'm seeing a lot of entries that make me think "that is so beautiful" but then after a minute or so I'm thinking... yeah, so beautiful... and... um... uh...

Good film. Chuckled quite a few time's toward's the end. Loved the V.O's of the Director guy. When it started I was thinking.. uh oh. But it really got better and more entertaining as it went on. Well done. =)

This really is a terrifically executed piece. The comedic timing of the actors, director, and crew members were spot on, and I really enjoyed the repetition of the film, expressing the monotony of filmmaking itself, especially with those that just won't cooperate. When they try to do the scene without the "Cal" character is just fantastic. I love that the AC plops down next to the actor like a stand-in. His reaction to the "ok, lose the moustache" was terrific, followed by a well-timed cut.
Generally, this work really stands out! Every little thing had me rolling. Other than the film being highly compressed, I really have nothing terribly important to nit-pick. Or nothing that would be of any use, anyway.
Loved it!

Thanks for good laugh, I needed that!

03-11-2009, 10:06 AM
Since the spoilers are already out... I like how the AC is trying to hide the fact that he's homophobic and uncomfortable with the prospect of a kiss (the way he leans his head away all the way to the couch arm)... and then later as the whole shoot is going to hell... he looks down in personal resignation to just get the damn thing done before turning toward the sailor, mentally preparing for the horror of the kiss... but as the outside lighting reveals, everybody just wants to go home... so he's ready to do it... and of course the other guy is ready the whole time, because he's the actor... man... I'm also laughing out loud as I'm typing. :)

I freakin loved it. This was great. Loss of the couch was a little much for me, but still great. My favorite thing was watching it get progressively darker out, as it goes from a gorgeously lit magic hour shot, to a kinda nice dusk shot, to a mediocre night shot, and finally a crappy night shot. Seriously so funny. Go ComedyFest. Way to use the DVX too by the way.

Frakk! Firefox crashed and there went my review, so you guys are getting a shorter one.
Loved this movie. The rapid de-evolution into absudity was brilliant and for it to get even more and more ridiculous... sheer comedic genius. You guys know how to make a comedy LOOK good and to make it funny. Here's a quoatable from me to you :
This film COMPLETELY brings the funny! Watch it NOW!

For the record... read my original post... I called him grip/slate.
Then a "proper" crew member came along and called him the AC... and I had to start calling him that also so I didn't sound like a yokel.
I did "PA" for Mtv Cribs here in STL and I chose, ran, rigged, and set up all the lights. How is that PA? Um... yeah... whatever. (My cam op told me to just smile and go with it.)

I absolutely love this piece... I'm writing this and I'n only 2 mins in.... I'll finish and continue...
Wow...
I haven't laughed this hard at a short film in a long time... seriously, one of the funniest short films I have ever seen period. I just about died when the power went.. and then I suspected the camera but still it was friggin hilarious... and also funny because crap like this does happen. Maybe not in such a horrific way and not all at once, but they happen!
Concept is brilliant. I'm jealous! Great acting and love how the 2nd AC becomes part of the movie! It's all around just a great film and no joke, one of the funniest shorts I've ever seen. I've now said that twice... I know...
Can't wait to see what you guys cook up next.
Did I tell you I liked your movie??

Maybe this should also be used in film schools to prepare would-be directors for some reality. Like the old 'stoned' stuff in the the 60s.

The overall message is universal and compelling: the tragedy of life wasted, denying true love. In this case, it was an impossible situation, -- of ache and longing and regrets -- it's ultimately a story about the relationships that shape us -- for better and for worse.
just kidding... it actually was really funny... i think this has the potential to go viral.

Ryan Patrick O'hara: I can't figure out how to vote either! Rating the thread doesn't cut it.
I was told to PM Larry R which I did...but I'm still waiting to hear back.
You do the same, and give us a Fat 10.
Apparently all the cool people get to see stars next to the movies on the viewing page, and you vote like that. But alas, no stars for me.
Hopefully I'll get them by tomorrow -- as I won't really have time to vote after that.

This was awesome, thanks! GREAT, unexpected humor, which I really enjoy. I was cringing at the beginning, wondering what I was getting into with this, and was pleasantly surprised.
As far as comedies in the fest, this is my favorite so far! Even comedy aside, I've ranked this at the top with just a few others.
Since this was supposed to have errors in all various capacities, it's difficult to pick anything apart with this, because perhaps it was how it was SUPPOSED to be done (very, VERY clever, BTW). :)
Again, great, great job.

In my experience, the comedies tend to be less well executed, in my opinion, that's primarily it. MacB, however, is the exception to the rule, as his work is usually comedic, AND well executed.

Loved this film!
This was really fun to watch, several times. I could relate to the "Murphy's filmlaws", you nailed the running out of light bit and the actor taking off. And the guy playing "Elliot" did a very fine job. Nothing bad to say about the technical bit either.
Last, I can't go without mentioning the mustachebonanza, that rocked my boat.
A fine piece of laidback comedy!

In the very first shot I thought "damn another short with no sense of pace"... but it turns out the pacing throughout is perfect. I haven't seen that in many entries. Pacing is where indi-films always get it wrong... but not here.
It's just long enough to set up the joke, each time.
I love how little the other actor cares about any of it. (that makes me laugh out loud and it's been days since I last watched this)... on the "... sent.. you"... then the "pshhhhh... lost it."
C'mon now... pure buttah.

Here's one last still -- from the photo session for the poster:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/11243/1237309151.jpg
So we had Racki & Will (the two actors) pose for all of these photos at the pier in Santa Monica.
We shoot...oh...20 photos with my old canon AE-1 35mm camera, only to realize: The film wasn't loaded right!
So here's Will in a sailor suit, Racki wearing a turtle neck and some tight-ass slacks, everyone is watching by now, and we need to shoot a whole new roll of film.
Troopers, they are. And good friends.

Great work here, really. I'm glad to see a number of comedies make the top 10, more than that I'm glad to see comedies done well. Rock on guys.

thanks for the congratulatory remarks fellas -- this is FUN.
i'm wishing there was more shit to watch.
Just looking at the forums:
i wonder how many times the word "congrats" was typed today.
Has to be in the hundreds?
Has "congrats" completely replaced "congratulations" in the English language?
The same way that "quotes" has replaced "quotations."
I don't think it's bad or anything -- just interesting.
Lovin' this. So glad this little motion picture is getting some attention.
I can't wait to move out to LA permanently and keep making shorts with these guys.

OMG TFF I practically busted my spleen from laughing so friggin' hard. On the first take...I thought this was a serious movie... and I was going OMG this acting sucks arse.. and the gay thing was about to make me wretch... Not like there's any thing wrong with that or anything <-- Seinfeld Quote 8P..... By the end of it I was damn near falling of my chair.
Thanks For Keeping It UNREAL!!! =8)))))
Haha that was sure fun to watch! :)

Congrats on making the finals. I liked your take on the theme... definitely helps to lighten the heavy load. Though I find myself asking, "why?"
Why not aim a little higher? This felt very safe to me and as a filmmaker I think you should strive to be more ambitious. Next time, I suppose... but good job nonetheless. Good luck!

Hey thanks for the comments man -- glad you enjoyed it.
I could see how you would think this about "aiming higher"
But the truth is, I don't think we could've been more ambitious -- given the circumstances:
We shot this while on vacation in LA visiting all the friends we made "A Brief Case" with -- a short that was entered in a DVXfest a few years ago.
All we had was a DVX and a skateboard for a dolly.
We knew the best looking shot we could get would have to be with natural light -- and as the light goes down, things would get much, much worse.
And so, out came this short!
Sure, the production value could be better -- but this was a kickass thing to do for us. Especially TheMacB and I, because we're so used to lugging around a ton of equipment, and worrying so much about every little detail.
It was great to get out there and just shoot something with some friends.

I have seen about half of the films so far, and I organize them in folders of 1 star to 5 stars, and so far this is the only 5 star film.
I wonder how it would do with a non filmmaker audience, but for this competition, its a killer. Congratulations.

Congratz on making the finals. Totally deserved. This might be the funniest short I've seen on DVX in any fest.
Loaded with funny moments. Good acting. Good premise. Great job.

Heck yeah, I've been there! The only thing, on an extremely minor level was I would have made the take progression increase more between scenes. Like going from take 6 to take 18, I dunno. Just something I thought about during the flick. Really enjoyed it.

Other than that a very funny movie on the life of a Indie maker. I felt the love lol. Gratz on Top Ten.
