Just curious if anyone here has tried importing HMC 150 footage into Apple's new IMovie '09 application?
I tried to import 720/24p footage today and it didn't like any of my clips.
I showed the clips with a circle and red-strike through each clip with "24P" printed on them? It's like it was barfing at having to import 24P footage.
My interpretation of this image (no error message) was that it doesn't like my 720/24P footage but I'm not sure if its the frame rate it doesn't like, or the fact that it's in progressive format.
Has anyone tried IMovie '09 yet?
Thanks!

Hmm, if I recall iMovie and FCE do not support 24p; I don't think they added support in '09.

I've happily cut 1080/25p in iMovie'08. Works rather well, actually. I'll be trying iMovie'09 over the weekend with 720/25p, which could be interesting - last time I tried, Final Cut Pro didn't like that. Mind you, we've had a Quicktime update since then.

Randy,
Gymnut808 is correct. iMovie 09 does not support 24p. I just ran a test with my system and received the same results you did for both 720/24p and 1080/24p. The other four modes worked fine (1080/60i, 1080/30p, 720/60p and 720/30p).

No 24p at all. Too bad. What is interesting is that I did import 720/60 using the 950x540 import preference -- the smaller one, not the larger one.
Then when you get to your Event folder and look at the media, the transcoded to AIC files are 1280x720.

Interestingly, I have not had any problems importing (log and transfer) the same 720/24p footage into FCE 4 (current version, just bought it this week).
I guess Apple thought that anyone doing 24p is probably doing a short film or more serious work and Imovie would not fit the bill (i.e., they probably need the capabilities of FCE or FCP. Since I make short films, I guess I should stick with FCE or FCP anyway.

I agree.
It's a product differentiation.
BTW, is it transcoding to AIC in FCE?

I would like to know what it is doing in FCE as well

A little research indicates that FCE only edits in DV or AIC. Nothing else.

wait...so imovie CAN capture 720/30p AVChd? I'm asking because i'm thinking of buying an hdc-sd9 used to hold me over until i can buy an hvx.
i'm wanting to capture 720/30p from an sd9(assuming all avchd cameras work the same way) in imovie, and edit in fcp5. would that work?

Nick,
I have no idea regarding the HDC-SD9 and FCP5 questions that you pose. I have an HMC-150 and the 720/30p footage worked in iMovie 09 and FCE4. I believe both products transcoded the footage to Apple Intermediate Codec. If you want more information MacWorld has a review here:

Hope this helps,

It is a transfer with a conversion to Apple's Intermediate Codec.
Which specific version of:
1. iMovie
2. Final Cut Pro
3. Computer - Mac Intel or PPC?

As an update to those who have been following this thread... Cineform released a beta of NeoScene for the Mac today and after downloading it I have found that it works quite well. One interesting side note is that after transcoding my 720/24p footage was able to be imported into iMovie 09 without any issues. I will run some more tests early next week and post an update if anyone is interested.
