So I've been working on a project for a week or two now, and I was cleaning it up, about an hour or two away from completion when FCP just shuts down. No biggie, I have autosave every 15 minutes, and I save often, too.
I reopen the file, and it gets to 'preparing video for display,' everything opens in the project tab, then ... Empty. "The application FCP quit unexpectedly." Every time.
I try my last autosave file. Same thing. I go back an hour, 2 hours, 5 hours, a day. Same thing.
I can open OTHER files, just not this project. I've trashed my prefs, and uninstalled/reinstalled FCP. What do I need to do to open this file?! I'm going crazy!
If it helps, I'm running FCP 5.1.4, 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

Dont suppose you know someone with similar FCP version to you to see if you could open up on his or hers? Sounds like the file itself it currupted from FCP quitting unexpectedly if other files open up fine, thats the only thing I could suggest... sorry mate

No no, you were right. After posting this, I took my external drive next door, and it boots well on his. So the question, then, is what's wrong with my FCS? I've reinstalled, so it should have fixed any bugs. AND it was fully updated ... I'm going to be bald soon.

Have you done a disk permissions/repair?
It could also be the last clip the your playhead was on in the timeline is corrupt as well. If you can remember which clip that was, maybe you can locate it on your hard drive and move it....better yet, try moving your entire capture scratch folder to another location. This may allow you to open the project file with all of the media OFFLINE. You can then close down that sequence and start reconnecting your media.
It's a series off deductions-
could be a bad Project file- in which case you could start a new project and copy/paste all of the elements into new project.(If you can get it open).
could be a bad sequence
bad clip,
Also how much room is on your Start-Up disk? You should have at least 20% free. Is this the same disk that your Scratch is set to? Could be running out of room.
Try Trashing your render files, audio render files, waveform cache files.
Noah? Where art thou?

Verify/repair disk. Done.
I couldn't open the project to copy/paste.
I have 16GB on my HD, 400GB on my external left.
Trashed prefs, all that...
*Update* - I installed FCS2. Yeah! Worked great opening the file. I tried rendering, and it would render for a while, get about halfway done, and quit, saying the file was in use (?). That's weird, as no other program is open (After effects, quicktime, photoshop - all closed). I tried rendering again.
"Final cut pro has unexpectedly quit"
:::Sigh:::
*EDIT* Reopened FCS ... everything works. It rendered. It's as if it never happened. I don't know what's been going on, but I'm glad it's over.
