I have some time until dead line so I figure why not shoot another. This film is fairly simple, 1 location, 3 actors, No VFX, Just Dialogue.

Just something fun that I put together for some friends who wanted to curse..A LOT.

2/8/09-Rehersals at my house. I need to have them know this front to back since most of the film is one take

2/18/09-Rehersal 2 is scheduled.

What's with all the double entries this fest? You guys have too much time on your hands.

Great tagline.

LOL. Thanks. This film as it looks right now, does not seem like it will be to difficult to shoot. This film is really just us having some fun and we are trying to figure out how to shoot it in one take. It probably won't happen but I really want to do it. A 6 minute continous shot is tough to pull off.

I was wondering the same thing. I like working on multiple projects, but my energy is going into one project this time.

Interesting info so far. I think I can sense where it is going. ;)

Agreed. I did a 2:30 one once and that was hard enough. I guess if you REALLY map out every movement/setup/line to a T and adjust your lighting/sound around that, you'll be fine. And find a remote focus pull and someone who's good with a steadicam!

The way it is looking now. We could possibly pull off about a 2 minute continuous shot. Anything beyond that would just be impossible for what we are working with.

We planned for months for the Puppeteer and things did not go as expected but it was fun and I learned a lot. But it was such a relief to have it done. I wanted to concentrate on something else. I just kept tinkering and tinkering around with it until it lost the vibe I was trying to get, then I had to bring it back.

And could someone please tell me how to quote text from multiple postings:beer:

Hey filthrich, I hope you get it done... the one-take thing sounds interesting.

Welcome to the fest (again).

Dude, i'm a BIG fan of one take shots. The planning that has to go into that is exhausting, especially doing complex camera moves around the actor's blocking. Wow. I'll tell ya this: doing it on a dolly is easier than doing it on a dolly AND jib at the same time. Either that or Steadicam it... or if you have a good shoulder support rig and a nice setup, it can be so cool.

Last time on "The Trade" I had some 1 take shots, but there wasn't enough camera movement in the shot, although the actors and their blocking was great. As long as you have camera movement, even something small, liek a slow dolly move.. wahtever.. it will help the look of it so much.

Good luck with the next entry and let me know if you need a poster. I have some downtime on the weekend.

We are gonna try some stuff this weekend to see if we can pull it off. I don't have a follow focus so I may have to run the HVX naked. Or just mount a 28mm and try our best. I think I have the blocking down. I have been drawing diagrams all day.

If you have time I would love a poster for hangman. Since mine is so amazing I have to take it down. It is blowing too many minds.

Update: We are having a read on Thursday. I'm gonna block the actors and work out movements. We really want to shoot a 6 minute one-take shot. So I have to work out timing, camera moves, lighting, sound, etc. It's gonna be tough. But I have to try it. If not, no biggie, I can still knock it out.

Richard J. Johnson

This film is complete. Basically we just had fun and tried out some different things. I kind of let the actors just freestyle some parts and really let them throw ideas around amongst each other. It was more of an experiment for us. But it fit the theme.

We tried to one take the entire thing. But it proved more difficult on set than on paper. So we abandoned that and just winged it.

I'm not happy with audio at all. And this proved to me that I absolutely NEED a follow focus and a monitor if I want to shoot like this again. I enjoyed it but I need to learn a lot more about this filmmaking thing.

hey filthrich, i really enjoyed your Hangman short... lots of foul language but I like it! LOL
I kinda figured out who the guy before she called but other than that it's a very entertained piece. The audio is very clear too... what mic are you using? was that recorded on the set or ADR later?

Thanks Zak! And There is a lot to nitpick with this film. We shot it so quick and I will never ever try to shoot handheld with out a follow focus and no shoulder mount.

Well, solid amount of "french language" but thatīs allright in my book for a film like that.

Personaly I donīt like handheld - even if it is motivated - but thatīs just a personal fetish.
The framing could have bin a bit tighter and on a longer lens sometimes, but if you go handheld without shouldermount in a appartment I understand the problems.

Otherwise I really enjoyed this one Rodney - great job and nice twist at the end.

Best plot so far! And I KNEW the ending man, it was sick. Awesome writting, loved the ladies. It was like the more "effeminate" pulp fiction with all the same attitude.

I'll mirror what the other guys said, framing. The location was kinda bleh, but at the same time it works in it's simplicity. It's not trying to wow you like that, but just tell a story. I liked the pacing too. It took it's time and every other line turns into a plot point.

Ultimately... awesome

Thanks for the comments! I really appreciate them. I was going for a kind of pulp thing. I really don't know if I achieved that as far a writing though.

I was not totally happy with this one in terms of audio and focus, But I decided to enter it anyway just to get some input on what I did right and what I did wrong.

I get off in 15 minutes and 23 seconds and I can't wait to get home and start watching some movies.

I thought this was fun.

I especially liked the opening sequence. It had a great energy and pace to it.

You characters and dialogue were cool, as someone else mentioned, it reminded me of QT's style.

I didn't see the end coming until we got there and I thought it was a clever twist.

Man, nice work! I really liked this one. I liked the story and I think the girls did a wonderful acting job. This was very professional and I'm impressed with it. The only thing I think you can improve would be the sound fx, the gunshots and the phone dropping. If you ever need any sound fx let me know, because I have a full library. The other small little minor thing that I noticed was that the blood on the sheet looked a little pink and maybe there wasn't enough of it. I really liked how you pulled everything off without really having to actually show it, like the gunshots.

It was a good short, some definite chemistry with your leads, really liked the "shit my bad" exchange but pacing in the middle seemed... off.

I loved this. The opening sequence was really great, cutting that together between the title cards is perfect. I love that it managed to be funny surrounding such an awkward and dark situation. The gal with the slightly fairer skin, Jace I believe, sexy hair. I know that's random, but hey, sexy hair never hurts a movie. (she needs new headshots, the one on the fist post doesn't do her justice) Anyway, back on topic. There were a couple things you can improve on, just technical execution, but it was a really fun and entertaining short, and the twist at the end I didn't see coming, the END END, I saw as soon as she picked up her phone, but the real twist I had no idea. Nice job. Go ComedyFest.

It's interesting the way you sort of bring up the idea of gender bending and LGBT in this piece (although in a way that sociologists would have a field day with). It added humor to the already funny situation.

The dialogue was delivered fairly well by your leading women. They were really fun to watch and the scene when they're down in the living room (after the first event) was really a delight to watch most of the time. There were a few moments when character seemed to be broken, but it wasn't too distracting.

The sound was very solid all the way through and the music was a nice accent. I actually feel like I enjoyed this one more than The Puppeteer. You've got a solid sense of comedic timing and direction of scenes. The gun shot should have been louder. It would have been ringing in such a room as that.

The only other thing I could comment on was the sudden shift from darkly humorous to a melodramatic edge. It felt like too much of a throw the other way to me. I feel like you could have made a very tensely dramatic and intense film by the way it ended, or made a film made entirely of dark comedy. it didn't seem to hit a balance.

Fun viewing though. Great effort!

The actors were wonderful. All seemed to play off of one another nicely and be really really natural on screen. I don't know how much directing you did, or if they just got there and played off one another, but the end result was really nice.

I felt like I wanted something more out of the story though. Like you start with a really pregnant situation. So I would love to see you use something like that to explore more options for it. Right now, it plays a little like a Tarantino rip-off. But the world is full of those. So why not next time look at the premise and see where ELSE it can go. I mean, this situation can take you into soooo much fun, dark comedy. Which you seem to have an eye for.

You def have the chops and the talent on your team. Now just keep pushing yourself to get better, explore more, dig deeper.

Good work!!!!

I enjoyed it. I think it could have been better but it was still fun. The opening held so much promise that wasn't quite delivered on. There were a lot of good lines of dialogue but this started to feel like talking heads as it went on.

SPOILERS:

I think you telegraphed the ending the first time the friend was going to call her husband.

I think it would have been a great to explore how she dealt with the friend after the ordeal. She obviously knew and I would have thought she would have played that up.

This was a really fun film. Dark and funny. The three actresses are all great with some great lines.

There was some repetitiveness, with the one girl asking why she's got a dead body in her living room way after they've already been talking about it for several minutes.

I think it would have been cool if the shot of the three girls looking down at the dead body had from a low angle. I kind of saw the girls as the Macbeth witches. Is that weird?

The end was effective, especially the way the music comes in.

Right on. I finally get to see some of your work, and I'm really impressed. Felt like an original voice. Great characters and great direction. Loved the choices of shots and what you choose to reveal/hide. I felt the subject matter was incredibly powerful (and I liked how you're using humor to explore it). It's topical and worth exploring, but the film let me down a tad in that the treatment of it all was a little bit superficial. And I don't mean the ending--that did surpise me--I loved it. What I mean is that you're dealing with an explosive topic, which is exactly what the art of filmmaking is made for. So you could have fine tuned the treatment of the topic so it had a more definite point of view that lived up to the strength of your direction. If you'd done that, this short would get quadruple the amount of attention! Because you nail the rest.

Dude that was seriously screwed up.. I had to listen to that with my headphones on. My wife turned and gave me "the look". I see you let your actors go completely wild with the swearing. And now come to think of it, I really didn;t even hear that much swearing for the entire fest. Your actors may have more than made up for what the rest of us didn't get in.

This pieces wasn;t as bad as you let on. It was actually competent. It had a beginning, middle and and end, with a conflict to be resolved. Sure there were some technical and stylistic issues with it, but I watched it all the way through to the end.

and yes now that I have a kid i've turned into some kind of swearing prude.

I think I like this better than your other entry. :)

The story works for me, as messed up as it is. I could see the ending coming just before the girl went to take a look under the blanket but that didn't ruin it at all. The performances were also spot on. It just worked.

Get your blood looking real (in both entries) and you won't have me falling out of it.

Very nice work!

Great story premise. I like the idea of doing something simple but high impact with a good twist at the end. Your choice of music at the beginning and seemed too comedic right after she kills her friend... Your actors did a great job, but they all seemed to have the same voice and the same set of rules that they were motivated by. The language is great... but the impact is weak when all the characters have that same voice.

I think its more interesting when each character have different rules that govern their behavior... like one of them stutters or one remains silent .. or only answers in one word responses.

This had some GREAT laugh out loud moments, especially at the beginning (heck, even the credit of ONE TAKE MEL got me). You actually had some good writing/dialogue in some of those spots, and I DO realize some people swear that much in every sentence, but I'm not used to it personally and so did find it disruptive.

I WONDERED if it was one of those women's husbands that was under the sheet, and knew it when she was going to make the call. Other than her friend being a complete lunatic, not sure why she called them over unless she was planning to kill them all anyway, since she was actually wanting their help with the body on the couch, etc.

Overall, I feel THE PUPETEER was a stronger film for you.

Wow man...lol...nice film. I laughed out loud a couple of times. You touched on a topic that isn't really seen that much. The three women did have some good chemistry. Are they friends in real life?

On the technical side, you got some good stuff going here. Nice shot composition and pacing and having seen the story, I see why you wanted to go with the 6 minute continuous take. My two nitpicks have been mentioned...get some real boom to the gunshots and some dark red blood...dude would have been leaking after two shots.

It seems to me like you kind of considered this your secondary short and I haven't watched Puppeteer yet but this one can stand on it's own. Good job man.

Oh, and Jace......oh yes.

Hey, Richard. I like your funny dark side. I also liked all your actors. They all had very different voice. Much of your dialogue paid off. There are some issues with DP/Cinematography that could have made the film more powerful. There was a moment when the camera swung around like a home movie camera, not like a camera intentionally working with the actors to tell a story. You're smart guy. You know what I'm talking about. The sound went hollow a couple of times. It took me out, but I stayed with it. I like where you placed your quiet moments. You created a nice pace.

The language is heavy, but real. I would keep the curse words, but remove a few to make it funnier. I know this amazing Australian DP who could curse circles around those girls. I'm going to start following you in this forum. You have amazing potential. Keep them coming.

The attention to detail on the set here is very painterly. The use of the three basics of red, black, and yellow mixed with the gorgeous and warm skin tones makes this one of nicest set and character collages in the fest.

What really works next is to have this warm and inviting atmosphere act as a dichotomy to the FU bitch and the violence. I love the incongruous nature of it.

Really enjoyed the film a lot. Beautiful to watch, and a solid story to support it, and visa-versa.

Well done ...

LOL! I found myself doing the same thing after reading Alex's post!

But anyway, I thought this was effective, but I saw the ending coming. I liked it, but not as much as The Puppeteer.

As far as the cursing goes, I knew it could turn some people off but Me and my wife swear so much all of the dialog sounds normal to us. :) I really wanted to write something fun and raunchy that the girls could run with.

I wouldn't even worry about the cursing. That's just how we get down sometimes. We say "f*7k" and "motha' f@#Ka' and mean that sh*t!

Thanks for the comments. ANd my SFX library does indeed suck.:( I am glad you liked it. Your film was very cool. There was no thread for it though.
No, man. I got a thread! I don't know why they didn't put it up. Click on the link below and give me a critique.

Richard, this was funny as hell. I was laughing from the get go - those ladies are great. There were a few moments where their reactions were not quite believable, but they were so funny that I was willing to overlook it.

I think I would have liked a more specific look to this film - maybe something a little darker and more contrasty since the comedy is so dark. Overall, great job.

That was a cool twist at the end. Liked how you took a well-known plot and made it your own and changed it up. It had a lot of funny moments! Yea, the SFX and location sound could have been improved but it didn't distract me from following your story. You had a lot of dialogue but it came across naturally and effectively. Nicely done!

Thanks Will. I am glad you enjoyed it.

I am still working on my grading skills and I must have tried 5 different grades on this film and ended up using the very first one.

I am just trying to stay out of sucktown.

Geoff I am happy you looked past the flaws and stayed with it. considering how well made your film was that is just a great compliment. Thanks for checking it out.

It's funny to me that I have been a recording engineer since the 90's and sound is one my of weakest areas on film. It is totally different than sitting behind a console and sliding faders.

wow.. the shot where the three girls were looking at the body was funny, well played. the language is heavy, but it added a sort of realism for me, given the situation. the opening music was a great choice.

i had a hunch something was up when she said the other body was upstairs
i thought: why didnt she say that until now? why would she drag him all the way downstairs and sit him up? but the end somewhat answered it for me.

overall.. this is a great short....

That was awesome! With a really great ending. Easy to follow (which shows good continuity and plot flow). Very entertaining I enjoyed it. I thought the acting was pretty damn solid. It wasn't dubious for a moment (accept for the whole context in general of them being that calm considering the situation but it worked for the film) I don't know anyone who says the F word that much though. Even in stressfull situations. I think I would have tuned it down just a bit.

really liked this flick! liked the quick pace you gave it. dialogue and acting were strong. the curses worked so i'd keep em in. the killer is too cool, she's really good! story was perfect for a 6 minute limit, just enough to have a blast with. parts of it ( esp the shot with the 3 looking over the shot guy ) were very tarantino to me. the women being calm added to it as well, good choice. it made them look much more experienced in all sorts of things and added to the story.

i liked it a lot! good work!!

Thanks Hoz! Very cool you enjoyed it. The pulpness was kind of intentional. I didn't want to stroll into Rip-off land just tip toe around the borders.

Thanks again for checking it out.

Looks like something you did quick and fun, and looks like you got something out of it. I did enjoy the actors playing off of one another.

Hmm, I like the story and all, I didn't understand why she kept shooting everyone though. Not only why was she still holding the gun, but why didn't anyone try taking it from her, or make her put it away? Fun dialogue though, I liked the performances.

This one was definately not for everyone. It was fun to shoot though.
