View Full Version : HXP-170 dead audio

My HPX-170 lost all audio today and other than the camera being relatively new (only shot 4 hours with it so far) I haven't done anything to disable audio.

The internal mics, as well as external shotgun mic, are all dead. I didn't change any internal settings or do anything differently (owned an HVX-200 for several years so it's not as if I'm new to the camera per se) but the camera doesn't pickup or record any audio (internal or external.)

Has anyone else run into this problem? I've run through everything I can think of and it's just gone deaf. Maybe it's just a bad unit?

Thanks,
Kenny

Given that you are experienced probably none of this applies to anyone but me . . .

(1) are you able to hear anything throught headphones?
(2) have you considered initializing the camera (back to factory setting) throught the menu?
(3) don't have mine right in front of me but my recollection is that there are a couple more options with my 170 then there were with my 200 . . . think there's an extra switch too?

Sorry if this only serves to confuse the issue--these are questions I ask myself when I run into issues such as you have described (and I've got no idea what you've done to check/resolve the current state of your camera).

Best.

What is your framerate set to? You might be overcranking or undercranking, which disables audio.

I would say (to make sure all of the bases have been covered) to check your phantom power setting and your frame rate to make sure you are in the modes that accept audio.

Ah, I usually shoot in 24P but just noticed the frame rate was undercranked and thus the root of the problem (guess I'll clutter up my view finder and show the frame rate going forward.) I setup the User 1 and 2 buttons to overcrank and undercrank and must have tapped the button during setup but thought I had checked and reset the frame rate. I'm an idiot.

Thanks for responding, much appreciated. Everyone on this forum are extremely helpful which is much appreciated by me and others.

i had that SAME problem once. during sound check for a live event none of the internal mic or mic ins were accepting signal. i was freaking out, suddenly i noticed my frame rate had been accidentally changed. switched it back and all was fine.

I think being able to map this function to the user buttons will get a lot of less than observant shooters into trouble, it is too easy to accidentally nudge the button and end up shooting 26 fps or 22 fps. Not complaining, I LOVE this feature but if you aren't on the ball, you can hose yourself if you are not careful.

I have done it too, but I always have frame rate OSD on so I notice it right away before I tear out what little hair I have left trying to figure out where my audio went.

Be careful out there!
