okay....I plug xlr into input 2 like everyone else. I get both audio tracks going. but my first track of audio peaked into the red today. 2nd track was fine as I had the audio set lower. how do I isolate the 2nd track and eliminate the distorted "first" track altogether?
then I guess I'll be left with a mono track, which I'll have to split, right?
depends, what editing software do you use?
and unless you are using a stereo mic with two outputs, all you had was mono in the first place.

If using FCP:
Drag the clip on the timeline(Lets say onto V1, A1 & A2). Most probably your audio will be a stereo pair. If so seperate them by: Select the clip, goto 'Modify' and unselect the 'Stereo pair'.
Now you should be able to select the audio tracks separate by simply clicking on A1 or A2. Click the audio track you want to keep. Then press 'Shift' +'Option' and while still pressing them both, drag the selected audio track one track down. Now you copied selected audio track onto another track(A3). Kill the unwanted audio track's level to zero and you are good to go. Feel free to drag the created audio track back to where the unwanted audio track is.

I use speed edit....Im sure there is a similar method, will look into it.
I thought setting up your audio this way was supposed to allow the use of both audio tracks, individually or simultaneously....
the way the hvx/hpx works (as i understand) is that 1 and 2 are for external mics and 3 and 4 will always be some form of the internal mic. so it will bring in 4 channels of audio unless you tell your NLE (or capture software) otherwise. once its on your timeline you can unlink them and delete all the tracks you dont need.
another thing, and again this is just my experience. a true stereo mic will use inputs 1 and 2 to make a stereo pair. personally i dont know of a stereo mic that uses just one xlr input...
