View Full Version : Make my final cut personal or not?

Long story short I'm a student editor with a passion for final cut.

I've primarily been doing editing on my own, but one day dream of working in a much larger type of post production house.

Currently, I have fully customized my final cut keyboard to do all sorts of shortcuts that have made my editing times hours shorter. If I plan on trying to work with other editors in a much larger and professional setting, should I not be doing this? Would training myself to remember my own customized shortkeys hurt me when working with other editors with a different set-up?

Thanks!

Just take your custom keyboard layout w/you and load it on whatever machine you work on.

Yeah there's nothing wrong with having your own custom keyboard and layout files- work the way you work best.

No it's not a custom keyboard it's just the layout in final cut lol. I just have a regular mac keyboard like everybody else!

You can just get a KBCover for like $30:

Of course once you start customizing your lay out it's more confusing than helpful.

I am also a student editor. I know the feeling, however, I think there are some advantages to memorizing the defaults as well. For example, if you happen to be away somewhere and you get involved with working on a project and you don't happen to have your keyboard layout with you your outta luck.

On the other hand, if you do change to what you feel works best for you it may be helpful on you edit times.

I personally leave mine alone, and I have cut way down on my editing times as I have learned how to adapt to the system, instead of making the system adapt to me. All really just a matter of how you feel.
