Greetings,
Newbie here, toast now has 10, 2 versions. Any ideas which I should get
for downgrading my footage for my old mac?
Thanks in advance.
My cam is being shipped and will have it today.
This board has been very helpful.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "downgrading", but you could export as "Apple Prores" from toast and that will be a very high quality SD file. Be sure not to pick the "HQ" prores, as that is HD.

I would spend the extra money and get the pro version.
Blu ray authoring and some great bundled applications that you couldn't buy for anything near the extra $50.00 or so

I guess downgrading was the wrong word. What I need to do is be able to work with the footage in fcp 5 and a dual g5.
(Cant upgrade fcp until I upgrade to a new mac.)
Thanks...

What codec will work with your version of FCP?
Is it 5.0.4, or 5.1 or what?

FCP 5.1.4
Thanks...

AIC or DVCproHD will work. I personally use AIC with my FCP5 G5 system. No need for ProRes as 1 I dont have it on my system and 2 I dont really see the point unless you were planning on doing some major FX or coloring work as the ProRes codec may be better for that with its 4:2:2 color space. Also make sure you are running 10.5 if you going to use Toast 10 for that is part of its sytem requirements. IM still on 10.4 so Toast 9 has been working well for me.

Your best bet is to seek out a copy of Toast 9 for now.

enjoy the cam. one thing though toast has problems transcoding 720/30p footage. I only shoot 720/24p no problems with that. I was successful in transcoding 1080/30p.

hey matt, what are the best settings you found for using toast when converting the 720/24p clips? thanks!

What do you want to work in?
DVCProHD, prores, prores HQ are all fine for us

I like AIC. No one ever seems to talk about AIC on here. I was using DVCPROHD but I think it took a quality hit and my AIC transcoded footage looks much better and sharper than my DVCPROHD. I would probably use ProRes if I had it on my system but really I dont see the point unless you need the 4:2:2 color space it provides for FX work etc.

I've been playing around with AIC and ProRes. My audio is off with the video on both. Video looks fine, audio not syncing. Any specific setting to fix that? Thanks!
I'm using FCP 6 now, toast 10, hmc 150.

If using FCP 6 and AIC or ProRes I would bypass Toast all together and use the log and transfer in FCP. sounds like you are setting the wrong sample rate in your audio with Toast which could cause sync issues.

The reason I am using toast is because the Log and Trans. in FCP is corrupting my files. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Audio in the Log and Transfer slowly goes out of sync there as well. I played with the sample rates and will continue to test.

no luck. does anyone have exact settings that work for them? i feel like i'm missing something simple.

does it go out of sync if you play the file in Quicktime?
how do you have FCP set up to handle your footage?

It also is out of sync when opening in Quicktime. I haven't brought the Toast converted files because the audio is off.
In FCP when using the Log and Transfer the audio clips slowly move out of sync in the QT files as well. My sequence in FCP is ProRes 24p (1280x720).
I am running this on a Macbook Pro 2.2 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.

Hey AndyMacJax...I had this exact question and matt.s kindly suggested these toast 9 settings for transcoding 720/24:
"AIC 1280X720
Current frame rate
Audio - Linear PCM stereo 48k 16 bit"
hope this helps:thumbup:

here's the deal. i am converting in toast using these settings. my audio is still out of sync. the original before converting is synced.
Footage: avchd 720/24p
ProRes 422
1280x720hd
linear pcm 48, 16 bit
I have also tried AIC and got the same thing. As well, I have tried most audio settings.

gave those settings a try and it doesn't seem to be any different. thanks for your help. I'm not sure why it's not working...I'm open to more suggestions.

There is a problem with toast 10 and converting AVCHD files.
This is the last response I received from Roxio:
"Thank you for contacting Roxio Technical Support
As stated previously, this is a known issue as far as audio/video sync when using AVCHD files. We are currently researching a solution and ask that you periodically check for software updates. Thank you.

Nothing new, but just wanted to state I'm having the same issues as Andy.
Files are perfectly in sync on cam and playing .MTS files through VLC - after transcoding my audio is (usually always) 9 frames behind, when transcoded within both Toast 9 and Toast 10.
I've tried every setting possible nearly, AIC, ProRes, and DVCPROHD. Going crazy. Don't trust FCP to transcode after getting garble on previous shots.

A couple quick ideas: Folks with this problem, have you updated Quicktime? Andy and I both did. I have 7.6 (472). I also installed Toast 10 first, then went to Toast 9. I believe Andy did the same.

What are you guys using for computers, and OS'?
If you are using FCP 6.05, and Toast 10, I think you require a Mac Pro, and at least OS 10.5 to run those apps successfully.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but anything less is asking for problems.

I'm on Toast 9 now though. MacbookPro, OSX 10.5.6, Andy said he tried on MBP and MacPro.
