Ok I have tried researching this and am getting confused. I am running FCP 6 on my Mac Pro. I just picked up a sony 14" monitor for dirt cheap as a playback device while editing. I can get DV footage to playback in real time. When I have a DVCPROHD timeline open the footage will not show up on the monitor until I hit stop... then the last frame viewed will be static. Am I missing something to allow the video to pass through or is it the fact that it needs to be downconverted to SD signal to play correctly?

The monitor was $25 after shipping on ebay due to some cosmetic issues but I am glad I picked it up to feel out this situation before diving into something more expensive. Do I need something like the BlackMagic Intensity card to send the signal to the monitor? It has RGB (doesnt seem to be functioning correctly however) but I was looking to send both HD and SD signals to the same monitor.

Thanks!

i dont think you can monitor HD on an SD monitor, can you?
(you can however monitor SD on an HD monitor)

Well, for one, DVCPRO HD will not play out via firewire thru a DV device....it needs to play out through a DVCPRO HD deck or camera that has full 6-pin firewire (HVX-200 won't work, HPX-170 will). Then you need an HD monitor, as Shawn said. If you want HD playback on an SD monitor, you need something to downconvert the signal, like an HD capture card or DVCPRO HD deck. The Matrox MXO is an option, but a cheaper one since you have a MacPro would be the Decklink Intensity Pro.

ok thats what I figured but wanted to be sure of my options for downconverting. I am looking into the intensity pro at the moment and trying to find a decent 19" - 22" hd tv.

Thanks to you both for your input.
