one reason i liked this camera is that for $80 - $100 I could shoot between 3 - 8 hours depending on the resolution and then keep that for a client as their archival footage. I assume i could also delete bad takes making more room and even combine cards. Let's say I buy a single card just to archive the buy takes to and reformat my field cards...is that a viable solution? This assumes that these cards will work like any removable media...can put clips on from the computer.

I shoot on 8 gig cards in the field and they become the archive because I hand them off to the client at the end of the day. No muss no fuss.

The HMC150 is great camera but the one HUGE failing it has is that there is no way to create unique original file names! This is terrible if you are thinking about archiving original media. The advantage of the compact media is lost because one must save & backup the transcoded media rather than the originals. If you rename the transcoded media files (and you have to, to keep organized) there is no way to automatically get back to the originals. (Unless of course you are really organized and keep records of each and every clip001 and what file name was assigned to the transcoded media.) If file names were unique then one could save the original files. Moreover since SD media is becoming cost effective, they could save the SD cards which is a lot more secure than backing up to drives. There isn't even a free utility available for OS X that let's you rename the original clips before the log and transfer function. This is terrible. I could probably write this utility myself if there was documentation available about the file internals on the cards. As it stands now when we replace our aging Sony cameras it will probably be with Sony EX1s, in spite of the additional cost, unless this issue gets addressed.

Once I copy the files to my computer I just write a text file and leave it in the folder takes 2 minutes

After much thought and head scratching it dawned on me that max card size is not the best way to go simply get 8 gig cards ( i shoot 1080/50i ) gives me 70 mins a card, as i shoot weddings i usually use between 3 and 4 cards, soon as i get home i copy each card to a dual layer 8.7 gig DVD as a data disk use the nice wedding lable that i make for the client and archive, just like tape
