The successor is called EX3. Look it up.

The EX3 is not the successor at all it is a step up from the EX1. There are no rumors or whispers about a new EX1 or EX2 as of right now. If you can wait then wait for NAB if not get the EX1 now and shoot your heart out!

Why would the EX1 need a successor other than the EX3?

Well for one they are two different prices one being over a grand more, which usually does not happen with your so called "successor". The EX3 is for the most part the same as the EX1 except for the interchangeable lenses. The upgrade or new version of the EX1 will probably still be fixed lens with a few tweaks different than the original. But to imply that the EX1 has been replaced by the EX3 is just not true. And to the original poster like I said before shoot now and worry about whatever else is coming later. It might be a whole a new camera that you might want (scarlet maybe)

Scarlet Shmarlet. The Red people are so big on announcements one wonders when they actually find the time to build the thing. Announcements... annoucements... next month... no next month... no this time for sure it's next month. Finally 8 months later they release a box for 3000 Euros without viable flash card support and you realize for this box to work you need 25 thousand Euros worth of add ons which wont be released until 2014. By then Sony will have released the EX 50. Get real. There will NEVER be a red which does what they claim in the delay they claim. NEVER! Stick with Sony. The EX1/EX3 have no serious competition anywhere.

Sounds like someone from Red stole your lunch money. Yes the sony EX1 cam is amazing I would say get it. Better if you buy it used.

Well I looked at my options two weeks ago and decided to sell my EX1. As there are very few on Ebay it fetched a very god price. What did I buy? An EX3! Beacsue there is no viable alternative. I picked up the EX3 for £4500 with 13 hours on the clock, so get looking and grab a bargain.

What do Panasonic have to really, properly compete with the EX1 or EX3? Nothing IMO. I know this is a DVX forum but sorry the HVX200 doesn't hold a candle to the Sony. It has 100Mb bit rate, but compare the image. It has P2, but compare the prices compared to a transcend 16Gb SDHC card. Yes it has the Panny look out of the box but the Sony is completely tweakable.

I don't think we will see a EX5 ( my guess is that will be the next in the queue) for a good 18 months. We might see another camera in the same family, perhaps a big brother shoulder mount with 2/3inch chips and 4 slots, but that one will be a chunk more and probably slot in to replace or go alongside the PDW-700.

So if was you I would not waste any time and go get it.

My worry would be that Canon comes out with a camera that records to solid-state media. They are poised to release something that would have a 35mm adaptor "built-in". Something that would be a like a video camera, but allow their huge line of 35mm lenses to be installed. They have already done it with their new DSLR (5D Mark III), it's only a matter of time before someone reworks it into a usable "video camera".

That was the biggest thing we were worried about before we pulled the trigger on our EX3 purchase last month. Just my $0.02 cents.

I hear you Mitch, but who knows how long before it hits the market.
It may be a couple years -enough time to make a few bucks with the current EX cameras.

Like you said, based on the current video features in the DSLR and new products such as RED's Scarlet, the big guys will have to throw us something to compete.
