Hello,
Do you think it's reasonable to get HV30 as a b-camera for HPX170 for a documentary? The size of HV30 is the attractive factor here.
Or will I have way too much trouble in mixing the results (well not really mixing, but more of complimenting the footage, shot with hpx170 with the footage from HV30)?

Well I can tell you that I've used it with the Canon XH-A1 and it has intercut well. I mean at least from the perspective of a consumer camera intercutting well with a prosumer one...it does the job good enough.
I haven't used it with an HVX200 or HPX170, so no advice from me there, sorry.
Good luck,
Kegan
*- Oh and Brian, I was browsing through your site and I saw that you use an interesting device (Pclix) for timelapse. Great little device it seems. I'll PM you with my questions as I don't want to hijack the thread.

I think it can be done but it depends on a couple of factors. For instance the lighting and also how do you plan on finalizing your project. Under good lighting conditions and if you finalize it as SD it is more doable IMO.

I went exactly this route for my doc shot in India:
I did this: shot the main stuff with HVX 720pn and for the critical and B-cam stuff used the HV20 1080 25p. Footage looks comparably well BUT I am not sure about the conversion because logging made me capture the HV20 in i50 mode automatically. Now I am trying to figure out if I need to de-interlace or get rid of superflous frames or what? Since I am PAL I read its not neccessary?....I would also like to know if I might be better off converting the HV20 stuff to DVCPRO HD 720p....I looked at JES Deinterlacer but cant get it to work.
if somebody helps me through the conversion stuff I can post stills from both cams for comparison. Its crucial that one learns to use the HV20 with as much manual control as possible!!! Full AUTO looks terrible when the iris moves. Autofocus of the HV20 is fantastic!
