I'm pulling the trigger on an EX-1 and need suggestions for a short shotgun to ride atop the camera. Under $1k including any shockmounts, dead cats etc.

Please also share your choices for shock mount and wind protection.

Is there a particular manufacturer/part number I should be looking for in terms of a shorty XLR cable to make the run from the mic to the camera's XLR input?

As always, thank you!

For interiors the Sennheiser MKH50 & Schoeps CMC-6U pre-amp w/MK41 Capsule are very common on film sets & now the MKH8050 is a new favorite. Other option is the Gefell m-200 w/m21 capsule... SANKEN CS-1, but if you can afford it the Schoeps CMC641S is MUCH better.

Sanken CS-3e is the all-round darling of video/movie industry at the moment. It is not a normal interference tube mic, but a linear array of 3 capsules. This gives it very consistent directional character and makes it suitable for indoor use also.

I bough the Sony ECM-678 at a bargain price on Ebay and so far I am very pleased. The sound is very good even in the interior.

I also got a Rode SM3 Shockmount.

And also there is an interesting possibility to replace the cheap mic-holder on the EX-1 with an additionnal shoe mount. In that way, you can put your microphone on the side of the camera (instead of on the top) and keep the top shoe mount free for something else. Thats what I did and works really well.

Have a look
