Basically, in a rush of money, work, and travel. This week I ended up with an EX1, A MBP (older version), and a trip to Miami to shoot for my boss. Now, I hate to say that I ended up with a such an amazing camera, and know very little about it, but that's what happened. I'm used to the HVX/DVX series, and basically have been given an extremely intense crash course tutorial with my friend.

Now, I own a copy of FCP, but I don't have the discs on me (back at home, living in a dorm), and need to know if I can dump the footage onto the MBP from the SXS card, even without FCP, since I know (atleast I think I know) about Apples Codec that comes with FCP that you need to view the footage.

Basically, can I still get the footage from my EX1 off my SXS card if I don't have FCP on my MPB?

Sure, just go to the Sony EX site and download the XDCAM Transfer app, it's free and works well for browsing clips.

As mentioned above, you can just download the transfer software from Sony.

But if you're just looking to quickly dump your footage to a hard drive for backup or so that you can use the card again, then you can just insert the SxS card into the MBP slot and drag the contents to your desktop or other folder. Just make sure you keep the folder structure intact.

Then you can go back and view it later.

So do I just drag the BPav folder to the desktop (Probably put it in a folder so I can figure out what it is exactly)?

And when I try to do the XDCam transfer App, I open it and get a little box that popes up that says:

Pro Codecs Required

You do not have Apple's Professional Codecs installed. These are part of Final Cut Pro and are required to view converted movies.

yeah, just drag over the bpav folder. Later when you go to open these in final cut, you can just point to the bpav folder in the log and transfer window and it will treat it like it was mounting the card with footage on it.

Not sure about the "pro codecs required" problem. I had thought all you needed would be in the transfer software. I haven't tried using the software on a machine that didn't have Final Cut installed.

Yeah, I figure if I just drop the BPav files, I'll be all set, but I'm gonna see if I can figure out something where I know it will work, since I would hate to fuck up all my footage when I go down to Miami for work.

With my luck, they are out of External Hard drives when I went to go pick one up, is it alright to leave it on my main hard drive on my MBP? Or should I clear out an external (which would be a pain in the ass) and use that on the business trip to Miami?

If yo manually copy the BPAV folders across yourself don't combine the contents of BPAV folders though, keep each BPAV folder in its own folder and let the Sony software do the combining later.

I am a doc shooter and work on small crews so there is never $$ in the budget for a media wrangler. I have gone (I hope) the easier way of buying this software, and it seems to take care of the downloads for me, putting the folders in the right places, putting it onto two hard drives, checking the files, etc. It is a little more peace of mind, because I know I will transferring at the end of the day when I'm tired, and prone to make dumb mistakes.

Does anyone else use this? Do you like it?
