The year was 1892, it was a leap year…Ellis Island started welcoming immigrants, the rules of basketball are published, a cholera outbreak occurs in Hamburg Germany, the Dalton Gang are shot by townspeople in Kansas and Lizzie Borden’s parents are found murdered at home in River Falls Massachusetts.

Then, there was The DARE...

This idea came to me in a dream. The script is just about finished and is coming in at 45 pages, shouldn't be a problem keeping the program length to 6 minutes, maybe even a little shorter. My biggest hurdle was character development, I didn't want to go too deep and complicate the story, but I have to let the viewer feel the lead role. Next up will be talent. This one will take a very special talent, one that can be expressive without being over the top, emotional but in a stoic manner. Lookout Craigslist...

1/23/2009
I think I might have found my lead actor! Once again Craigslist has come throught for me. I'll be meeting with him (Harry) this weekend at a local Starbuck's. There's a lot you can tell about a person by the kind of coffee he orders. I'm hoping for a Cafe Mocha with an extra shot kind of guy for this role...and will be totally put-off if he orders any kind of Latte. I little mundane conversation and a few chocolate covered coffee beans and I'll be able to tell if he can handle this part. The trouble will be trying to pay attention, as my mind will keep drifting back to the "Miss Laid" auditions, which I am continuing to have even though the part was cast month's ago...it's just hard to give a good thing up!

Next on my list for this one are the props, there are a few items that will be hard to find, but needed to make this one all that it can be.

Script still needs a few tweaks and everytime I edit something, I endup writing 3 more pages. I'll get it there soon. I've also looked back on the comments recieved from past entries and am trying to apply them here.

This film is an in-depth look into the mind of the greatest illusionist to date...Harry Houdini. Through the use of the bobble-head, I am exploring the psyche of this master magician as he attempted, for the first time ever, to escape from a straightjacket in under one minute.

It is a little known fact that, in 1892, he had actually accepted a bet from a colleague and for the first time in his life failed. We watch time pass and see him struggle to escape. Through it all Harry never loses his composure, even as sweat beads-up from his intense effort to dislocate his shoulder joint and achieve success. Harry is determined, yet even in failure, he never loses his composure.

This short film represents the sheer will of mankind, the intestinal fortitude we all have to succeed, and the self-respect to hold our heads high and know that we gave it our all, even in the face of failure (loss).

Interesting good or interesting bad? I'm slowly being broken down and for the first time am seriously considering a Mac

ZazaCast
02-22-2009, 04:42 PM
Interesting good. It took me a few to figure out how it works...and there's a LOT to it. I know I'm just scratching the surface. I used Premiere for years until switching to Vegas...then I picked-up a Mac G5 & all kinds of software to check it out. (I also need Mac's for my 'real' business, so it was a write off for me)

I don't think there's anything you can do on the Mac that you can't do on a PC anymore. The only real difference is the Mac is much more expensive! (Please, no comments, I use both platforms on a daily basis and respect them both equally...it's just a fact.)

IMNUMBERZERO

Again... lets not turn this into a Mac vs. PC thing.

...and I think we've found the one going around bumping ratings down!

Rodney V. Smith
02-24-2009, 07:58 AM
only reason i'm considering a mac is for better workflow with other editors for color correction, etc. the more people I bring into the post-production end of it, the more complicated it gets with so many people clueless about just how advanced Premiere CS4 has become. I can now import FCP workflows into CS4, but not the other way around. tends to be a little frustrating when all you want is a little color correction.

I need to find myself a Mocha genius...

So who's the gullty party bumping the ratings down regardless of the actual quality of the thread?

Now that that is over....

I can just see this guy in a thrift shop.

INT. THRIFT SHOP - WHENEVER

Wall to wall god knows what. ZaZa, ageless and timeless, makes his way through the aisles. His skilled eyes scan every bad idea that ever made money.

Then, he sees it. Tucked in amongst headless Barbies and Dan Quayle autographed schlock, sits a Houdini Bobble head.

ZaZa takes it up, inspects its quality.

Satisfied ...

ZaZa,

You had me hooked from the musical ditty during the leader.

That was just plain awesome. I liked how you demonstrated the impending time limit with the clouds zipping past the moon. It set the atmosphere and really put the pressure on ole Houdini.

As others said, the sweat was a great touch, and a bobblehead...brilliant!

This seems like a very entertaining side project and I'm glad you entered it. The single line at the end was such a comedic kick between the legs for Houdini.

For what it is, this is very entertaining.

Look... I can't tell if you're kidding around or not anymore and I know you're hurting because of personal things in your life (been there, done that, wouldn't wish it on anyone)...and I feel for you...so let me just wish you the very best in life and lets leave it at that.

May the most that you could wish for be the least that you receive.

Both.

I loved the build up, thread and film. It reminded me of a Tyson fight: all the smack talkin', promotion, ticket and PPV sales, bets ...

... and then Iron Mike ends the fight in under 15 seconds.

It was kinda like that.

Worked for me.

A 40+ page script was the first clue ZaZa was pulling something.

That's the ticket! You're right on the money....if you read carefully, there are all kinds of hints in there for you. :)

Beautiful, timeless biopic film. This is one of those sweeping masterpieces that...ok, it was just really funny. Great job ZaZa. I can't believe it but you actually got a performance out of Houdini. He was so intense. Nice. Awesome film. Oh, and great retro bumper music at the beginnig. Thanks for this one!

...as a side note, I originally cast DVXuser Tom Marshall as the lead..but due to scheduling conflicts and a nasty neck injury, he was unable to make the shoot.

And you know what? I think Tom could have put a really nice spin on it. We'll never know now I guess.

I should have mentioned before, when I first watched this in the beginning parts that I was creeped out by the head the way you shot it coupled with the horror music. And the moon/clouds looked great. Just wanted to mention how well the whole thing was put together which really made the ending payoff.

Hmmm, maybe get SNL to give you a spot on a show? Just a crazy thought.

Joe, what a fun romp.

I seem to recall reading about how you were inspired and had hammered out 40+ pages!? Nice bluff. Remind me not to play cards with you!

What's amazing is how the use of a bobble-head drives home the fact that good editing can enhance an actor's performance. Nice job!

Great choice of music for this piece too. It's light hearted and fit perfectly.

Kudos.

Now, don't forget to complete Miss Laid!!

At the moment we are involved in an other not DVXuserFest project. So we will have a look more ahead if there will be money (ohhhh santa economic-financial-crisis!) and time left for a film at QuestFest
