View Full Version : FCP 6.0.5 720/30p files going offline

I'm having this ridiculous situation at the moment. I'm currently working on a film and nearing the final stages of editing.. but my files keep on going offline. I am not moving any files around within the external and yet they keep going lost.
I reconnect all of the clips, save the project, close and re-open.. and they are offline once again... and sometimes with different clips than before.
Any ideas?

Thomas,
If I may make a suggestion: make a copy of your project file from within FCP (give it a version number), then quit, and trash your preferences. There are many reasons, but see Ken Stone's excellent article with details here:
http://www.lafcpug.org/Tutorials/basic_trash_prefs5.html
This odd behaviour does occur from time to time in FCP, and usually to the end of a complex project! Once you trash the prefs, then restart FCP, set up your User and other preferences, and reconnect your files. With luck (and advantageous planetary alignment) they should re-connect and stay that way.
As well, if you don't use a maintenance utility regularly, get Cocktail and repair permissions on all connected disks. Cocktail allows you to repair permissions on the System drive; Disk Utility only allows this on connected or other internal drives. hth, kl

Ok I will try this. Thank you for taking time to help me out. I would bake you a cake if only I had the necessary ingredients.

Several hours later...
The preferences are trashed but the same problem is happening again..
Opened the project... 2 files are offline
Closed
Opened... 5 files offline
Closed
Opened... 12 files offline
I'm not changing anything, just opening and closing final cut what the beef?
I don't know how this would relate but I'm thinking possibly it has something to do with avchd 720/30p cause this is my first time with this type of footage. I also have several still jpegs and downloaded sound effect .wav's as well which have not gone offline. Hm.. be wary of 720/30p for now until final cut upgrades?

Thomas,
That's really bizarre, and my FCP (same version) handles 25p and 50p without any kind of hitch.
may I suggest that you join LAFCPUG and post your experiences there?
See: (http://www.lafcpug.org/forum.html)
Be specific about your setup; there are many very helpful people there. Good luck, KL

Thomas, from FCP 2 to FCP 4.5HD, I was a regular poster there; a very nice bunch of people. Good luck. kl

Thomas,
did you ever find why this was happening? If so how did you resolve it?

Well I did some messing around, and couldn't ultimately figure out the problem was. I have used plenty of footage that was 24p and 60p and never had a problem when using toast and fcp log and transfer.
the 30p footage couldn't even be read by toast 9 at the correct frame rate. It would transcode it at 2x speed.
this led me to believe that the 30p footage simply couldn't be read correctly.. whether be it a problem with the camera or a problem with something on the mac (which i'm sure it's the later)
For now I'm just avoiding 30p all together. I mean it's probably the least useful one on here anyway but I will try again sometime in the future perhaps after final cut updates to edit natively.
