try not to sh*t your pants, but SABI PICTURES has a second short film to enter into LossFest

Not that I have a proclivity to dump in my shorts, but I just might make an exception here.

Looking forward to it (the film I mean).

It does a bit - there are mountains behind those clouds (Mt. Cook, actually)...

We never got to see them as the clouds never rolled back further than the moment of that picture / day of shooting.

This is a page from the Journal Surya kept during production:

LAKE ROTOROA: SANDFLIES

Today we turned off Route 6 at Kohatu, on the way to Paparoa. There was a lake there that Arjun and I visited, we had a picnic there of some sort – nothing of much consequence apparently (as I don't remember what happened there).

The view when we arrived after about 10 km of stones and gravel was peaceful. While they set up, I walked along the bank of the lake, then stood in water up to my ankles for as long as I could. The glacier water fed into the lake somewhere in the distance, and as hot as it was, the water still made my feet numb. It was a good stop on a long drive. I tried to think of Arjun, of what might have happened here. Nothing.

I don’t know why he wanted me to come to this lake again, but after about 10 minutes I had enough and got back in the car. It wasn’t emotion or frustration, or anger that got to me – it was the sandflies. The females are vicious, and I was bitten in about a dozen places. I had to leave. I never even opened the box.

I’m already regretting making this trip and I don't know how long this will last.

DECEMBER 13

I don't see this point of this, I feel like I'm wasting everyone's time by being here. It doesn't make any sense to me - why he even wanted me to come all the way across the Pacific for this. What memories did he want me to relive here? I haven't felt a thing.

We shot by a seal colony along the coast near Wall Island. There was a bridge path there and they followed me to the top over looking the ocean. It was so cold. I stood there for a while after the sun had set, looking at the family of seals below as they shot. The family of seals were living on a crevasse of rock, the bashing of a constant sea spray around them. The tide was here. One of the smaller seals was sleeping on some broken branches and a bed of moss. It was so dark, everything was purple. I knew somewhere down the road, in another life, i would dream about this vision of a family on the precipice - but for the moment - I just put the box down and blinked. Maybe tomorrow's shoot will prove more exciting than today.

Dust Request

Day 6

Moerecki Boulders Beach

I felt his presence around me today,
I stopped to say a prayer by boulders
that were formed like a pearl forms in the mouth of a shell
in a deep ocean.

They felt ancient – these boulders, and it occurred to me that I’ve never felt anything for rocks either way in my entire life.

I felt sick for a moment while I was praying,
I turned and could see them shooting me with their camera.
I had forgotten about them, but I kept them in my periphery – it was as if not making eye contact would make it seem like they weren’t there.

It’s been 6 days, and the last 2, I asked them to leave me completely alone. It’s their film, but this is my husband.

I finished the prayer. When they called out “Cut” I took a moment to be by myself, climbing on top of the largest roundest rock I could find – feeling this little grey ball sitting on top of this great big blue ball spinning the sun out of sight.

I was thinking of you Arjun, and thinking of you laughing at me from wherever you are now. I was thinking of the way your skin felt when you were dead, and how peaceful you finally were once you had left your body.

Images of those boulders sit heavy in my heart with these thoughts of you.
If you were around me in that moment by the boulder –
maybe you felt my prayer, and know what I’m feeling right now.

Thanks herman & all -

Yeah, this is in New Zealand, on the south island at Moerecki Boulders Beach. If you've been there, you know how it feels there (ancient & like you're on a set... in our case we were). I feel very lucky that I got to shoot all of my loss-fest entry in NZ.

Apparently these rocks are millions of years old, which was interesting because you could just come in with a pick-up truck and take one of these things (which probably would have happened if we weren't in New Zealand).

We only got to shoot there a little while before the sun went down, but as it was going down the whole place was bathed in a purple light. It happened just after these shots, Surya let us follow her around a bit.

Most of New Zealand is conducive for shooting, but as some of you know - it's the South Island that is really incredible. On this day it was truly beautiful there.

Producer's note: No bathrooms, which isn't practical for shooting. We had to use Surya's RV. Making a mental note for the next time shooting there...

DAY 8
DOUBTFUL SOUND.

We drove on a bus for 1 hour up a road that led over the mountain into the Fjordlands. It was a break from the sandflies, and it was quiet. I sat in the back, looking backwards at the rainforest as it disappeared. They didn’t feel like shooting today, so Kevin let me borrow his Flip Mino, and this is what I shot:

[Surya’s VIDEO coming soon]

I don’t know where this journey will end, but somehow you think it will be beside you.
But coming this far, I know that I feel you are near me, and that you have been on this journey, but I know your body is dead and cremated and I cannot hear your breath. You are not here.

Or maybe you are like the surya [sun], when eclipsed by the moon. You exist. Your atma burning brightly but behind a mask of invisible darkness. Like you were in life.

Perhaps, God willing, you will reappear to me at the end of this journey. Or perhaps I will come to learn that it will only be when the horizon of death becomes visible for us all. I have come this far, Arjun.

But as you have asked in your Last Will and Testament, now I travel by water - further into the Fjordlands.

This was extraordinarily interesting and unexpected. I'm honestly not sure at all if this was a work of fiction or not (but I sorta think that's how you wanted me to respond...).

I have to agree with some others that it felt a tad long. I suppose I didn't need the repetition of some shots towards the end. I'm lukewarm on some of the effects at the end too.

I think I need to watch this one again. That's a very good thing.

kevinkshah
03-10-2009, 02:29 PM
I'm wondering if anyone got what happened at the end (if you were able to make it...)? Did you see the ghost?

Thanks for all the great responses, and for checking out the film. The compression on a location film like this is a heartbreaker. You should see this thing in 1080 HD. Actually, I'll try to post an HD version.

Running time: Yeah, six minutes is a long time for a short like this. Thanks for bearing with it. Hopefully you saw the ghost at the end. For those of you that don't want to watch the whole film,

I have a short version shot from the ghost's perspective of Surya's trip (that doesn't duplicate any shots and is 2 minutes long).

It move's really fast, and it was shot with a Flip.

I'll try to post that too.

Oh, also, you may be interested in the Last Will and Testament that Arjun wrote. I'll try to get that up as well. Thanks for your patience and for your continued comments!

Yes this is a very beautiful and spiritual short film - congratulations gents. It is especially impressive that this was shot on the humble hv20!

Mark Harris
03-10-2009, 05:20 PM
Well, you get the Aetus award for best scenery. :)

I'd agree with some that you could afford to trim some fat out of this and get to it more quickly. Once it got where it was going, I dug it, but honestly at about 4 min, I started scrubbing the timeline to get there.

And I guess I am in the minority from what others say, but man I wish you had a big camera for this. They always say the camera doesn't matter. In this case, it would have mattered.

This isn't a knock on the filmmaking, but the quality of the video compared to the images was stark to me. I think even a D90 would have given you more out of the scenery due to the glass. But it was hard to lose myself in those images the way i think I should have been able to.

And it might be compression, but for what I'm seeing, I don't know. I'm watching these all on my 32" 1080p monitor.

I think you spend WAY too much time looking at the back of her head, the side of her head, her hair, basically everything but her FACE. The eyes are the window to the soul. There is no door to the soul in the back of the head. I say this because what's important about this is how it affects her. And I don't get it when I am constantly looking at the back of her head.

Last thing, the effects at the end. I'm struggling with this as well in mine. I understand what you're looking to do, but compared to the tranquil and serious nature of the rest of the film, those sounds and visuals you chose feel much more at home in a genre horror film, than in this one. Like I said, I am struggling with the same thing in mine, not wanting it to feel hackish, and trying to come up with something semi-original, or more at home with the tone of the piece. It might be worth your time to look a little harder at those effects. I'm experimenting with wind, waves, all kinds of things besides those digital "whooshses." Same for the visual. I'm trying to avoid anything but color in mine. Maybe there's something more subtle to be done in yours? More in line with the tone of the film?

Sorry to be so nit-picky, but I know you're were one of the filmmaking super-men SABI breeds in their top-secret lab, so felt compelled not to let you off the hook for anything :) Just wait till I get my hands on Forsman.

I must say, I really admire what this film set out to do. It looks beautiful (despite the compression), it sounds great (love the pan flute oriented music), and the lead works very well.

However, I feel like this film tried to take on two many visages, tones, and techniques that it seemed uneven and loose toward the end. Also, there were moments when the aspect ratio changed (could be a simple slip or intentional...not sure what the justification for the intention would be).

But even with these little set-backs, I found it thoroughly enjoyable viewing and I would LOVE to see a more crisp HD rendering. Nice work!

This was Gorgeous with a capital G. Very nice looking entry.

Mark, it was compression. You can clearly see compression artifacts, especially in certain scenes.

I have to agree with most of what has been said. It was a long journey.
I didn't see the ghost myself.

I concur with most of the comments thus far. Absolutely stunning visuals! I really liked the way it opened. But it did feel a little long in places.

I do like the way you have incorporated several different aspects of storytelling (the journal entries, the alternate angle from the ghost's perspective etc.). I think it is a whole other realm of "alternative storytelling" that needs to be utilized in today's media savvy environment.

Good job!

This part of the world is beautiful. I've been to New Zealand... for a whole hour before taking my transfer in Auckland to Cairns, Australia. Next time, I have to spend more time there. I concur with Mark's statement about manning a better camera to capture the full majesty of the vistas. This needed to be carefully compressed because it relies so much on the imagery. I would have sacrificed two minutes to reduce the compression and get a higher data rate. There are some beautiful shots there.

Shawn Philip Nelson
03-11-2009, 12:45 AM
Ditto to pretty much all of Mark's comments (except hey wait, since when is there an 'Aetas' award? :-)

GORGEOUS scenery...except it felt like more of a random "hey, we're going to be on holiday in these awesome locations, lets shoot something", which, nothing wrong with that. At the 1 min mark I was like "oh, she needs to dump the ashes", and the movie never grew beyond that. Just a screensaver for 5 more minutes.

But whomever was operating the camera, clearly has a great eye!

I gathered that no place was suitable for spreading the ashes until the "ghost" was present and then she felt at peace, which I usually wouldn't be able to read into unless there was dialogue, but you told the story well enough visually. the only thing I didn't like was that the credits were too short and I couldn't scroll to the right place to see them, ha ha... nice work though, it was a pleasure to watch.

I must say: only because I read here I think I understood, that this was the real ash of a real dead husband of the real wife. If I would watch this film without knowing this, I would have more questions than answers ( for instance in the first scene she stands with her feet in the water and gives an obvious sign to the cameraman, to stop filming her, who then pans left into the landscape).
Its a very nice idea to accompany the wife while she fulfills the request of her husband to throw his ashes in certain places in NZ. The way its filmed, edited and presented now, its impossible to understand the reality behind the seemingly fictuous film, while its actually more a documentary?
Having lived in India I understood immediately what the box contained ( from the title) but a shot of her reading the last will ( and us looking over the shoulder) and a notion that no acting took place but that this was a real story, would probably help?

Nice landscape shots.

Great shots. The story for me was a little too obvious. I kind of figured out what was going on about half-way through, and so it got a bit long for me. That having been said, it was still a very pretty, and surreal piece. Good job.

Amazing locations - phenomenal colors.

The music and pacing was languorous and lovely.

This was like a beautiful poem.

I really enjoyed it.

I watched this yesterday but wanted to think about what I was going to say before responding.

Overall impression = I liked it.

It had a simple, straightforward story that unfolded beautifully. The locations were incredible.

My major complaint is that this felt MUCH LONGER than 6 minutes. There were times when it seemed to move interminably slow. I was disappointed in some of the compression, too. It stole from some of the breathtaking scenery.

The camera work was quite different from what I expected. That's neither good nor bad. I guess I was expecting Zak's style of camera work.

Definitely a beautiful film with amazing locations, but I do think it seemed to linger on for too long. Overall a great entry!

Well done. Great locations. The length didn't bother me it seemed to move fast. I would have cut it a few seconds out so there was more than a half second of credits at the end. Maybe add the credits in as the film is still going..

But it is a good story of a person who has to deal with a loss

Hi

I liked this. Beautiful scenery, music, good lead and some very nice shots.
I didn't see the ghost. And I agree that the effects in the last scene seems a bit out of place with the rest of the film.

Good job though

Beautiful scenery and shots... some excellent locations you've got there! Loved how expansive it was... traversing across so many different areas... great, emotional music as well.

Enjoyed it thoroughly!

Excellent locations.
I wish it would have a bit more carefull colorgrading.
I liked the framing and pacing, thou the scenery sometimes felt a bit disconnected from the rest of the story.

Well done and shot.

Beautifully shot and great locations. Story was simple in a good way. The shots at the end, I guess they were from the perspective of the deceased, were cool. Raw naturalistic filmmaking. Pretty cool!

I'll agree that the locations and imagery are quite beautiful, and I found the film engaging to watch. I'm not sure it grabbed me 100% storywise. The effects towards the end threw me a little bit.

It's LATE, but I made a commitment to watch, rate, and comment on all the films before nights end. At this point, I've only got time to watch & rate, so I'm simply letting you know I've done so for yours.

If you'd like a specific review of your film, please just PM me to catch my attention, and I'd be glad to come back here & post a review. :)
