I'm having trouble trying to export my footage to hd. I am also somewhat new to using Premier Pro CS3. When I capture my footage from my xh-a1 to premier its in high definition. But when it exports the video it comes out to 720 by 480. Is there some custom settings that I need to change? Please if someone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

I kinda figured out how to export but after doing that the file size is extremely too big. Like 10 seconds of footage equals out to 1.2 gigabytes.

It sounds like you weren't exporting the correct codec the first time around and the second file being very large sounds like an uncompressed file. The uncompressed file will give you the best quality but will be huge. Also, make sure you are exporting your correct frame size. H.264 is a good codec for web videos. If you are trying to get the best quality and a manageable size you should export using a codec like DVCprohd or Raylight (http://dvfilm.com/raylight/index.htm) Avi. There is also Cineform and HuffyYuv.
It really depends on what the file you are exporting is going to be used for.
Best,
