I'm still getting acquainted with my new HVX200A, but I can't quite figure out why the volume output which comes through on my headphones is sooooooo low and can't be seemingly be turned up to be sufficiently useful.
Do I need to be actually recording onto media for the volume to be higher?
Thanks for your help!

Turn the monitor level up on the top of the Camera. First switches under the handle marked Page/Mon/Var (or similar)

I found the reason why I was getting such low audio in the headphones...I went into the menu settings under RECORDING and turned off the ALC (Audio Level Control) and increased the gain to -60. Also, turning off the AGC (Auto Gain Control) also improved things a whoooooole lot.
Thought I would reshare this information with everyone.

How do you turn the AGC off? I shoot in the 720 24fps mode, and that menu setting is in blue, so I can't change. Thanks for posting this..I was beginning to think I had a headphone problem.

OK, you realize that's going to affect your audio recording and not just your headphones, right?

I solved the problem by going to the Main Menu, scrolling to "Recording Setup" and then turning off "MIC ALC." I run my microphone audio (usually a lav) on channel audio 2, and set the "Mic Gain2" to -60db.
You can get even better audio by purchasing a small headphone amplifier made by ROLLS called "2x4 Headphone/Earphone Amplifier." Their website is http://www.rolls.com

I've found the audio monitoring to be too low as well even with it turned all the way up. I found a set of headphones with volume control that helps. In a loud room situation it is hard to confidently monitor a lav or boom mic on talent.

I'll try and check at the studio tomorrow. I had another shoot I needed more volume for, called my local broadcast supplier and he brought it that day. I didn't actually do a test but I'm guessing I got at least 20% more volume, maybe even more.

I had gone through every menu at least 3 times and could not figure out why I had no volume in my headphones. All I have been shooting for the past 6 months have been clips for commercials or music videos which didn't need any monitoring of the audio.
I even used the remote to turn the volume all the way up, but I guess that's only for the little speaker on the camera.
I just want to say, Thank you "Shooter"!!!
I had forgotten all about the "Page/Mon/Var" buttons on the top. And the camera was so high I didn't even see those buttons!
I just finished my shoot. My audio had great levels in my headphones!
Mission accomplished.
And once again,
thank you "All"!
