I thought this was very well done. Good lighting, editing, pacing, music and the casting was just right. I loved how it felt like a 2 hour feature that was finally wrapping up, bringing the story together in a tight, entertaining sequence at the end. That was very well done for such a short film. I'd definitely would like to see more of your work in the future.

Wow, very nice work. Very well directed, it all felt and moved so naturally. For having such a fast pace it never felt rushed. I'd love to see what you could do with 30 minutes. Really good job.

I actually wish I had more time to tell the story. I it's like a 20 or 30-minute story compressed to a 6 minutes short.

The end result of this was a pleasant surprise. I am Tore Fagerheim, the DoP on this, some of you old DVXusers might recognize me, even though I haven't been active on here for years. :)
Shooting this was a real challenge some times, and it was my first time handling the HVX. But overall I'm happy with the way things turned out. Kyrre is an amazing director, and we seem to function very well together on the set.

I liked this one. Well done, but my only comments would be that it was a little odd how the one actor went from what I can only assume to be Norwegian (based on your location) to English. It threw me off a bit.
Other than that, it was a little hard other than the initial shot of the Father to connect the sister's visit with his passing. Maybe there were a couple too many shots that almost made the middle a little too long? Other than that however, I thought it was excellent - well shot, well edited and well executed.
Good job,
Kegan

Very understandable, though it was actually improvised by the actor on set. English is taught from very early in school here and 99% of the population speaks it fluently. When we quote something, we tend to not translate to norwegian.
I used those lines, and the music that's in the scene, to take some of the weight of that sequence, and not make it a "kids, don't do drugs"-moment. :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

I definitely agree on the sister-scene. The though part about that scene is that it was supposed to hint at the protagonists situation without giving to much away.
Thanks alot for your feedback Kegan!

Nice one. This flowed really well. Edit was good. Good story.
Your exterior shots all looked good, and the interiors seemed overlit and without motivation for what was going - bar the first party shot after he had taken the mushrooms. Talking specifically about the bedroom scene with his sister and bathroom scene with his friend.
A solid entry thats for sure.

I absolutly agree! We had all this expensive lighting equipment, but no gaffer. In those particular scenes we were also way over schedule, so things got set up in quite a hurry.
Thanks again!

I thought this was really great, Kyrre. The best I have seen so far in this fest.
The criticism I have is that I did not care for most of the music. It felt a little distracting to me in the scene where he is freaking out in the bathroom, and I didn't like the solo acoustic guitar at the end. I wanted a bigger swell at the end, I think.
That's literally my only complaint. The acting, directing, editing, and cinematography were top notch. I would very much like to see some other work of yours. Well done.

Kyrre, I totally dug the simplicity of this story. How someone tries to bury themselves in anything else, sometimes to keep them from accepting the truth, no matter how ugly it is...in this case, the death of the boy's father.
While I didn't quite get what order some of the events were taking place in, I liked the shots (except for one where he was running outside at night, a tad too dark/underexplosed for my tastes), the settings you had, the experience of his life & running away from his problems that you gave us. Some excellent framing in spots as well.
It's harder to tell if someone's a solid actor or not (for me anyway) when it's in a different language, so I WISH I could have understood them in their own tongue, but that said I got the impression that they're solid performers & liked what I saw nonetheless ... seemed very REAL.

I have some mixed feelings about the music myself. In the ending sequence I wanted it to be subtle and was very afraid of make it too pretensious. But maybe we should have gone further.

I tried to use the running as a visual metaphor for how he was running away from/escaping reality. I am really pleased you picked up on that!

Hey I don't have time to write a big long review but I'm just popping in to say I really enjoyed your piece. It flowed quite nicely but it was kind of stretch that the protagonists problem was link to the 2 second shot of his Dad's picture earlier, it might as well have been a complete reveal (without a minor flashback or something) instead of a callback, but I can understand the time constraints. I liked the use of playing with the hvx's limitations with the grainier shots, most of us seem to try and hide is and it felt like an ascetic here which was nice. I liked the use of the diegetic club music but didn't like the original piece of music at the end, it didn't really seem to fit the character's personality and environment.

Really good job kyrre. Well shot and directed. You did a good job of balancing story and time constraint...involved enough to mean something, but simple enough to digest within the time frame. Lots of shots that I liked here. I thought the actors did a good job as well.
If you really want nitpicky criticism, the end sequence with him running seemed kind of floaty like it was green screened...maybe the backgorund seemed to be moving too fast. Other than that, it was really well made on many counts. Great job.

This film laid out an intriguing moral and ethical complexity. Its presentation, although far too kinetic, reminded me of a few bits from Fassbinder films.
I thought the ending was very strong, and everything linked together well, but some things felt a little capricious at times. There are elements that feel a little under-cooked to me, like the relationship between Johnny and the guy at the club/bar in the beginning. I took this as a way to demonstrate Johnny's falling away from stable friends and getting mixed up with "bad seeds" so to speak because of what happened.
I really like the way you tackled the subject matter and I definitely enjoyed the cinematography. It was well shot, blocked, graded, and edited. The lead's performance carried the film well. Easily one of the better films I've seen so far.
Nice work!

Real Strong Entry, easily one of my favorites thus far. Enjoy all aspects of the film except one. The music at the end took me out of it. Maybe something a little less intense (or less strum-my) would be more appropriate. Other then that it captivated me through out.
Great job.

I felt that way as well. I sort of wanted the focus to be solely on the lead's actions in the scene and seeing everyone else's reactions.
Still strong, nonetheless.

Looks like a lot of people don't like the music in the ending. Some want more, some want less. I definitely agree it did not turn out quite right. It was also originally intended to be played faster, but we had no time for the composer to re-record.

I can also see the "greenscreen"-ish effect in a lot of the footage (it was shot on location, obviously :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):). I actually had to ditch a few nice shots due to some these artifacts.

Gotta echo what others are saying. Great film.
The race to the funeral was nicely done. Love we don't really know what has happened until the end. Really kept me in the story.
The 'boy banter' was good. Not over the top. I usually hate seeing puking guts, as I feel it's often tossed in for shock magic, but it worked in the overall spirit of this film.
Very nice film indeed.

This was a solid entry :) One of my favorites for sure. The acting and story are the strongest elements of this entry. It's very layered, textured with numerous interesting characters, concepts and executions. There is little to say in a technical regard.. it's well produced. Good sound. Good cinematography. Looks like you favored a more natural look, at least it doesn't look very lit to me. Coolest shot occurs at :58 seconds :) but notable mentions also include...
1:53-1:56 which is cool because of the moment in general... it's not cinematically great or anything, but it's well deserving for the moment in relation to the story. By itself it's just a shot, but coupled with story and beats, it makes the shot glow.
3:55-3:57 is really cool... love the slow walk in with him... brilliantly suitable.
5:22 final shot is excellent. It's always important to end on a good frame. IMO, the last frame needs to be one of your best frames in a movie. It's the last image we're ever gonna see in relation to the story, it has to be great! I'm happy it ends in a cool manner as such. Again, I don't find the shot itself that particularly attractive... but the execution of the shot in relation to the story, once again, raises it to a different level.
Good team you put together here. Excellent film. You're officially tied with my other highest vote for the fest so far.

I really liked this one. Quite the character driven story. I was pissed at his so called buddy with the smirk on his face when he asked him what time it was.
Loved the music, the acting, cinematography... it was all good.
I really don't have much to say that's negative. Aside from... can't any of these guys party and not end up vomiting? :)
Really strong movie. Quite unexpected, I like that.

I liked this one a lot. Great story; it did a great job of dealing with the theme of loss and acceptance.
Technically, I thought it looked really good. The quieter dialog scenes with the sister in the bedroom sounded like they were missing an ambient room track. Sounded a little weird when the dialog faded in and out. I thought the editing and pacing was great throughout, although I felt it was a little slow in the middle.
Besides those little nitpicks, I really liked this film! I've only watched it once but it's definitely on my list to see again!

Thank you for the kind words about the cinematography! I really aprreciate it.:) 1:53-1:56 would probably look heaps better if I had some more dolly experience, this was my first shoot using a dolly, so it could have been better. But we were also severely behind schedule, so there wasn't really enough time to perfectionize it.

Really enjoyed this one, especially the scene of the "crazy" party that was just a few frames. I think the editing of this piece really stood out, as did the sound design. I wish I had time to write a longer review, but I'll say great job. I really have my doubts about 6 minute dramas, especially ones about death because they tend to be over dramatic and over written, but this one felt honest.
One quick question, what was your setup for shooting the running scenes. Were you on a truck or using some kind of dolly?
Thanks and great job.

Hey guys, Loved the film.
Awesome lighting, cinematography sound design etc. Really good stuff.
When i was watching it i was almost certain it was shot on 16mm, awesome job pushing the HVX to its limits. Just curious, did you shoot barebones, or with an adaptor? and what software did you use to CC?
thanks,

It was shot purely barebones. I graded this using Apple's Color, added some grain as well. Nice to hear you thought it looked similar to 16mm, that was what I was going for. Looks a lot better in HD though!

For me, the changes in the lighting from shot-to-shot kind of jumped all over the spectrum and I found it to be a little distracting. More light and less light in the same scene (but different locations) made me twitch a little bit. I'm certainly no lighting master or director of photography of note, so take my comments for what they're worth (which is exactly what you paid for them).
I enjoyed a lot of the shot composition and think I can learn a lot about good shot composition from this film. I thought the sound, sound design, and music were pretty good. The only issue I did have with sound design was the footsteps as he was running to the funeral, they didn't seem to fit in there as they were presented.
I really did like some of the great shots in there. Nice job!

solid job all around. same props as all the above, and the one negative as Nick_Lee said -- the font. wished it was more drop shadowed (??) or yellow, or just easier to read on those white backgrounds.
have you any more shorts? films? etc??

Thanks a lot for the interest! I'm gonna update my website with more content eventually!

I've only just started watching -- but this was pretty damn good!
Very good performance.
And the people were so beautiful looking. Often times in these flicks people sacrifice performance to get the pretty face -- but you got both worlds.
(The actress [sister?] was adorable)
"Binds the galaxy together" had me chuckling with that storm trooper head. In fact, your interpretation of being on mushrooms was pretty close to a trip I had in high school...frightening. (aside from the dead dad of course)
Other than some pretty bad sound out in the woods (which i can understand) this was a very good movie.
thanks.
I have to say, the cast looked really good in this one. (nogayness) The shots of him running at the end were shot perfectly. Great film.

Really well shot, and you did an excellent job directing, the acting here feels very genuine.
I am confused though, what happened at the end? What was he late for and what was that? His father's funeral?? I've been thinking but have no clue.
Great to see our friends from across the pond joining in with entries, thanks!

He was late for his fathers funeral, yes. Kinda disappointing to hear that not everyone catched that. Perhaps I should have intercut more to make it clearer.

No, you should NOT have intercut more to make it clearer because it was fairly obvious already. I thought the story was well told and it gave the audience just the right amount of info to A) understand what's happening, B) care about the characters if they like these kinds, and C) to allow the audience to fill any gaps with their own ideas, experiences, or interpretations.
I think the cut is fine the way it is. I suppose the only thing I was curious about was the guy at the beginning outside of the club. It made sense to me, but I wanted more because it seemed like an intriguing relationship. For this cut though, it's fine the way it is.
Again, great job!

Very well done short... acting was excellent. Cinematography was great!
One of my top picks.
This was a good loss fest film. It made the point. It was shot well and the story moved nicely.
I just would have left out the puking scenes. Or do it where we don't have to see it.
Other than that well done.

and I would leave the puking scene in. There is enough that can get in the way of capturing a real moment and it makes all the sense in the world that what he is doing would lead to retching. I am glad you didn't try to play it safe and not show that.
Nice work, I really dug this.

Nice entry. I thought you did a good job on this.
I was a little thrown with the switch to English and then back but it seemed to work in a surreal way.
The sister was quite attractive.
I thought you did a good job of telling your story.
The only that that really bothered me on this was at 00:58. I liked the cut but the total absence of noise even ambient room tone had me momentarily wondering if you'd lost your sound or if something had happened to mine.

Thanks Lawsuit. I just got a bit worried how probably others also had trouble understanding the point of the whole story. Really comforting to hear you object to that. :)

Favorite thing about the film: I like the whole last minute or so when he makes it. I also like the look of the film a lot. Lots of style.
What would have made me like the film more: A stronger conflict could have helped. The audience doesn't really find out the conflict until late in the film, and even then, we don't know if this guy actually liked or even knew his dad... so is he trying to get there just because he feels obligated or because he truly wants to.
Favorite shot: I had a lot of favorite shots. I really like the shot of the guy looking at himself in the mirror as he talks to the protagonist who is sitting to his left. It's at 2:36. It's very fitting of that type of character to be kind of into himself.

I think it would be a bit hard to dig deeper into the protagonist during the 6 or so minutes. I did think about it, but didn't wanna squeeze in any cheap flashback moment where he's having a good time with his dad. But I can see your perspective.
Thanks for your feedback! :)

This is easily one of the best looking films of the fest. In fact, I think it might be my favorite in terms of cinematography. Really liked the compositions. Really liked the grading. Good stuff all around.
Some of the sound wasn't great - especially the footsteps in the running scenes, but it wasn't bad enough to distract me entirely.
The acting was good and kept me interested in the characters.
The story, however, did not keep me entirely interested. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult, I think, for the film to be a memorable one.
It's worth repeating, though, how great the look of this film is. Awesome stuff.

Man, this film really struck a chord with me. Excellent acting, cinematography, music. Everything felt so real. I have to say this story hit pretty close to home. It's eerily similar to how I was when I lost my mother. You captured that sense of grief brilliantly.

So,
sorry it took me a while to comment, there's a lot going on in this.
I think that you really nailed a lot of different things. This short did a lot and it did a lot of it exceptionally well. It shifts quite a bit and it keeps it fresh.
Props for the Mushroom sequence. simple and pretty intense/funny.
The only thing I had issue with was when he ran to the funeral and it cut to the slow-mo-profile shots of him running. I felt like this was pretty different than everything else.
really nailed the ending though.

it reminded me of Lukas Moodysson's LILJA 4-EVER in that way -- raw naturalism puncuated with deliberate cinematic flourishes. worked for me.

Interesting, you had some nice shots. I liked how it was cut. But just trying to be constructive, I know how a lot of people on here get really defensive and try to get people banned because they can't take a little criticism, but I never really got that he was in any way stressed, or sad, or trying to avoid those feelings. He seemed like he was just out and about like any other twenty something. That's just me though.

it hits home with me because when i was 19, my father was dying of pancreatic cancer and I "dealt with it" by acting like it wasn't even happening. I avoided those feeling by behaving this way and I just kept going out, hanging with friends, staying out late, going anywhere and doing anything that would keep my away from home.
second note, i've never seen anyone here try to get a member banned for a critical review. what prompted you to say something like that?

I think a lot of people feel the same way you do, and are expecting different behavior from the protagonist. But I really didn't set out to make a film about a guy being sad about his father passing. I set out to make a film about a guy who is in complete denial of his father passing, and then finally accepts the situation. The grieving part comes after the film is finished, so to speak.

Thats tragic Zak - yeah just to pipe in too - when i was an adolescent and my parents seperated I too haha went into nightlife overdrive (albeit at a younger age than most) and was in self denial about it till it finally hit home!
I think Kyrre's story captures that faithfully, Chad grief works in mysterious ways.

My gf and I sat down to watch the top 10 last night, in order. What a delight your film was! Very impressive. Technically excellent, fabulous lighting, great use of backlighting. Locations look real, solid camerawork, good story. My one complaint would be that you had to throw in a flashback explaining his father's death, so that we would understand his behaviour and sudden need to rush back. I felt like that was a weakness in the script, that it didn't know how to wrap things up, and needed to resort to flashbacks to explain everything.
But anyhow. You definitely deserve to be in the top ten. Solid film. Congratulations!

I felt like that was a weakness in the script, that it didn't know how to wrap things up, and needed to resort to flashbacks to explain everything.
The intent behind that flashback moment was not only to clearly explain that his father passed away, but also to indicate that the protagonist blocked out pretty much everything his sister tried to tell him. He is in denial of everything, untill he actually forgot his fathers funeral. He then starts thinking about what his sister said, and his responsibilty towards his family becomes apparent to him. He realises he needs to accept what has happened.
I don't know how clear that came across, and I do see your point.

I don't think I explained what I meant very well, I too have known several people going through that process. Everyone I've known kinda has this blank shell over their eyes, but just behind their eyes is the electric shit storm of emotions they're hiding from. Don't really sweat it, with the silly crap I'm going to be submitting to contests, yal are gonna be asking yourselves why I thought I should talk about the depths of your work when I'm making movies about stuffed animals eating pets and then getting flushed down toilets.
