Imagine that you have the ability to see the thoughts of the person standing next to you.
Now imagine that the only thing you can see is their darkest secrets, their most sinister thoughts.

IN THE DARKNESS LIES

I changed my mind. :)

I'm currently working on another longer short but I wanted to shoot this script. I originally wrote it for Dustin but he had to back out.
So... here I am.

I've since made some major changes and revamped it to suit my style. Completely different ending as well.

Throwing my hat in the ring once again.

More details will follow soon.

Tough finding a lead out there? That sucks. Is it the same type of character from the original script? I think I had some submissions from girls in Ottawa. I'll have to pull up their headshots and send them to you but chances are you already auditioned them.

It really is tough. I had plenty of no-shows. Although I don't think the weather compiled with the bus strike helped me out any.

I haven't ruled them all out but I'm still looking.

The rehearsal went really well. We worked through the script a few times, changed a word here and there, altered a scene slightly. Things went well and everyone seems to be really into it.

I'm just trying to work out a pretty crucial location. I'm hoping to hear back about that on Monday.

Going to scope out an apartment in a few days to see if it will be suitable for a scene that I want to shoot.
If I'm satisfied it will probably be the first location that I shoot at for this project.

I'll post some grabs once that happens.
I'm really dying to get started on this. It's been too long.

Not sure really. It just looked like a sketch. Of course it could be a sketch of your actor. I'm sure it probably is. Didn't really think about it to tell you the truth.

What I'm saying is that I used an actual photo and just messed with it in PS.

Hey Mike,

Although I am by no means an expert at poster design, I thought I would pass along some feedback.

In order to come up with a "professional" looking movie poster I usually do a little research for inspiration. I will look at posters in a similar genre and see how they were designed. This isn't considered cheating btw. :) All pro designers do at least some research when tackling a new project. The idea is to borrow elements from various sources, but put your own creative spin on it. The site I like for this is www.impawards.com

For the title treatment, I would suggest browsing www.dafont.com for a great selection of free fonts. The great thing about this site is you can plug in your title and see how it looks in various type faces. Thousands to choose from.

For images, your own photos are best, but if not available, I would suggest www.sxc.hu as a great source of free stock photos and artwork. Takes time to find just the right image, but worth the effort.

Re. your poster specifically, I like the face but not the black square on her forehead. I'm not sure what it is, a "hole"? As is, it is distracting and probably not necessary.

I like the limited color palette. Very moody. J-horror (Grudge) like.

I'm not sure about the title font. Is that Trajan? Considering the genre seems to be thriller or horror judging from the photo, perhaps a heavy sans serif font, heavily distressed.

It would be nice to have a tag line. Something short and compelling. One of the best ever, "In space no one can hear you scream." Coming up with a good tag line is surprinsingly difficult, but it creates interest.

I LOVE the banner. I would keep it exactly like that.

Anyway, those are some thoughts.
Good luck.

Great advice! How do you use these fonts from other web sites? I have no idea how to import them. Do you import them into PS somehow?

As for the black hole/mark on her forehead, it's intentional and has to do with her character. It should make much more sense when you see it.
I agree though, it may stand out a little too much.

I'll work on a tag as well. I suck at this stuff.

You'll have a great shoot. You even have light flurries of snow for dramatic impact. Have a good one and get us some grabs!

no, thought you might shoot the rooftop while the snow is still light... unless of course you want MORE snow.... hmmm

Nothing wrong with a little snow. :)
Right now there's nothing really left on the rooftops. That and I'm having a bitch of a time finding the right rooftop to shoot from.

Cool! Keep me posted.

Finished the first shoot. I'm really not sure how it went. I want to see the footage first. I know I got some good shots in but I think my coverage may be weak. We'll see.

Some Grabbage!

Be gentle! First time with an HVX in a tiny ass apartment.
And by first time, I mean first time. I didn't even have a chance to turn it on and play with it before the shoot.

These are raw with just a slight contrast crush.

Thanks.

Probably 2 more shoots for sure. Maybe 3.
I also forgot to get some OTS shots last night. I'll have to go back for those.
I really need to get a crew. I'm starting to rush through things and even missing shots. Not good.

Really wish I had a field monitor or something for this shoot as well. I found it very tough to focus with the HVX's LCD display for some reason.

I may have to do a re-shoot though. Either that or a hell of a lot of pick up shots.

I may get more out later, we'll see. I'm still not entirely pleased with all of it.

First time with the HVX?!! That's great man, happy for you. What cam. were you using before, I can't remember. After using it though, you'll never go back.

Grabs look great and I agree, those are def. Horrigan angles. BTW - I know what you mean about a crew. Try your best not to rush cz we end up paying for it in post.

I really like the HVX but I actually prefer the HV20 in some ways. Not all of course, just some.

I have a lot to learn.

Could you elaborate Mike? I bought an HV30 a few months ago, but haven't used it on a short yet (used Dick's HVX200 for Melody). I'd like to know what advantages you think it has. Thanks!

Sure. Much better super focus that uses the entire LCD display, not just a small portion. Shows up on an external monitor, not sure about the HVX. The HVX seems noisy in low light. Could just be me but I've read that it's a big weakness. I've found this to be true. The size of course is a pain in tight quarters, you can put the HV20 anywhere.

You have been making some great films with the HV20. Your story telling is what makes your films so good. Going to the HVX is only going to help.

How did the size affect your work? The biggest camera I'd shot on before this one, was the HPX500. Which affected us in that our gear was not up to holding it. And now with the RED, it's hard to fit it in certain places an HVX would be easy. It's heavy, so the camera op has a lot more work in hand-held, etc.

Did the larger camera affect how you worked on this?

Michael Anthony Horrigan
02-21-2009, 01:10 PM
Did the larger camera affect how you worked on this?Yes it did. Mostly due to the tight quarters I was shooting in. The bathroom was extremely cramped and I could barely get into that spot, let alone point the camera. Holding it at that angle in that spot was extremely tough for me. I just need more practice though.

http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/23237/1235058410.jpg

You can sit the tiny HV20 in the palm of your hand, up on a small shelf or even on the dash of a car! Using the HVX kind of eliminated possibilities like that for me.

I do like it though. I just need to rethink my shooting style when using it. It was a big learning curve for me but I'm glad I did it.

This won't be a big surprise but I'm officially out of this Fest.

In Darkness Lies was going to be an Exhibition entry but there is no way that it will be finished in time. I'll eventually start a thread up in the User Films section and move forward with it. I really want to make it into a longer short but I don't want to rush it. Once I lock down the rest of the locations I'll get it finished. I'm still hoping to get Herman to score it for me once it is locked.

Good luck to everyone else entering! I'll be watching all of them and commenting as per usual.

Hopefully we'll get a good turnout.

I need a break anyway. :D

Sad to see you won't make it in this one. But I think you're doing the right thing. Too many times we rush something trying to get it finished and it doesn't turn out exactly how we'd like for it to. So, do your thing and make it right. Let us know when it's finished!
