In some cheap editors (Ulead Videostudio) you can add narration to the timeline while previewing the timeline. I've been searching in Premiere (6.x) to do this, but can't find direction on how to record a commentary audio track while watching what I've edited.
Any ideas?

You can upgrade to Premiere Pro. You can do that on the Canopus Pro cards with Edius. You can record in Soundforge or what have you and import to your project timeline.

I have Soundforge 6.0, can you view a video file in it while you record an audio file? Forgive me, I'm new to all this...

I don't know. SoundForge will open and play an avi, but I don't know whether you can then record. I rarely do voice overs. I exported my project to tape and watched it on my camera while recording voice over in SF.

I'll try exporting. Seems pretty straight forward.

What I do is use the camera to record the VO while watching the clip. Ive done this many times for demo cds/DVDs and it sounds great. Just turn off any flouresent lighting so you dont get that annoying hum. If there is a small budget I use a professional sound studio and bring a laptop of the clips... One major tip i can give you is record your audio in small clips and name them accordingly instead of one long ass recording. This makes it alot easier to make any changes or insert anything left out.
