Hey everyone,

This might sound sooo stupid but I'm somewhat surprised after shooting something.

I shot a wedding in 24p on the DVX and when I edited it and rendered it in Premiere 6.5, the DV footage had SO much noticable lined interlacing. I thought it was supposed to be progressive so why do I see lines everywhere after rendering? I then encoded the DV rendered file to Quicktime progessive and the QT file also has interlacing. This really pisses me off because I DON'T want any interlacing in my footage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help! What am I doing wrong and what do I do to prevent or help this? I know by clicking the "Deinterlacing" checkbox on in Premiere 6.5 before exporting will degrade the image quality so I want to avoid this. The thing is, why would I need to click that if the footage is supposed to be progressively shot anyway in 24p???

Please reply soon!

Norm

Hey Norm...

I'm the farthest thing from an expert on this cam or how it works... But I'm pretty sure I've read that, more or less, when shooting in 24p, even though it's initially in 24 frames p/s, that when captured and the pulldown done (whenever it's done, by cam or NLE,) that the footage essentially becomes regular, interlaced 60i that now has the look of real 24p. That might explain the interlacing you're seeing. I briefly captured and edited some 24p footage w Premiere 6.5, but didn't experience what you're describing. I'm switching to Vegas, though, so haven't done much experimenting since.

If that's true, the only way to go, yet again, is 24pA. Also, even the manual admits there is image deterioration with 24p as opposed to 24pA due to the differing pulldown process used.

I just read a lot of posts about 24P in Adobe Premiere Pro User Forum. It is clear that when capturing 24P in Premiere, it just capture the 3-2 pulldown frame from the DV tape. In NLE that support true 24P capture, such as Vegas Video, it remove the 3-2 pulldown or 2-3-3-2 pulldown in 24PA when it does the capture. Read http://www.sonicfoundry.com/support/productinfo/24p.pdf to learn more.

In simple words, Premiere does not support 24P or 24PA capture, you need to use another software that support 24P capture to do the capturing and import the true 24P AVI into Premiere for editing.
