I have old footage on Hi-8 tapes that I want to transfer to DV using my DVX-100.
Does anyone know the steps to make it happen?
I've connected RCA cables to the 2 cams, I'm in VCR mode, what's next.

Clicking on Menu I see the DVX's VCR functions are
1 Playback Functions
2 Recording Setup
3 AV In/Out Setup
4 Display Setup
5 Other Functions

In 1, 2 and 4 I don't see anything to be set specifically.
In 3 AV In/Out Setup, should DV OUT be set to OFF? And A. DUB INPUT be set to A_IN?
In 5 Other Functions, should Remote be set to something?

And when I do setup properly, and the Hi-8 cam plays won't the picture show in the DVX's LCD?

I have never done this, so I can't say for sure. I don't think that the DV OUT setting matters. I don't know about A. DUB INPUT, but I suspect it has to do with recording onto audio tracks 3 and 4, which you don't want to do. (Looking at the manual would probably give me a clue, but I don't have it handy.)

I don't think Remote needs to be set.

I think that the picture should show in the LCD. It certainly does when recording from firewire input.

Thank you, sir, I'll give 'er a whirl, though now I'm worried my old Hi8 may have problems of its own. Got an old one handy? http://pana3ccduser.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I had to transfer VHS tapes for my doc, and what I did was plug the VCR out into the DVX with tape cued on both, hit record on the DVX and hit play on the DVX. No problems.

Try the same with your Hi-8. Keep it simple.

Just did a VHS transfer last night. Set the DVX to DV OUT in VCR mode. Composite cables from the old camera or VCR to the DVX. Firewire from DVX to computer. Played the VCR (and it will show on the DVX viewfinder) and live captured in Final Cut. Easy as that...except for the tangle of wires.
